This Laos in Depth tour is designed to offer a comprehensive insight into the country covering all the main sights and more.

Begin in Luang Prabang, the cultural capital of Laos and discover the temples, markets and natural attractions in and around Luang Prabang.

From Luang Prabang travel through the scenic Laos countryside, stopping at minority villages, Tad Lak Sipet Waterfall and Ban Song Cha en-route to Oudomxai, the provincial capital.

Travel to Muang Sing, visiting hilltribe villages to discover something of the culture and lifestyle of the ethnic groups in northern Laos.

Travel to Luang Nam Tha along winding roads through beautiful tropical forests while passing hilltribe villages en route.

Return to Luang Prabang with a visit to Pak Ou Caves on the way.

Travel overland to Vientiane with an overnight stop in Vang Vieng, one of the most scenic destinations in Laos.

Spend 2 days in Vientiane, the capital city before flying on to Pakse in the South of Laos.

Visit the Angkor period ruins of Vat Phou and enjoy an excursion to the Bolaven Plateau, Tad Fane, Tad Yuang and Tad E-Tu Waterfalls.

From Pakse, head south along the east bank of the Mekong to Khone Phapeng, the largest waterfall in Southeast Asia and one of the most impressive sites in Laos.

Continue by vehicle to Don Khong, or Khong Island, a scenic island set in the middle of the Mekong River, with small villages and rice paddies.

Day 1: Fly from the UK

Overnight flight from the UK to Luang Prabang.

Day 2: Arrive Luang Prabang

On arrival in Luang Prabang you will be met and transferred to your chosen hotel with the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 3: Luang Prabang

Enjoy a full day to discover Luang Prabang.

Visit the National Museum (former Royal Palace), a modest but graceful building combining traditional Lao and French beaux-arts motifs.

This turn-of-the century royal residence has been preserved as it was when the royal family last lived here and provides unique insights into the history of Laos.

Visit Hor Phrabang, a collection of the Royal Palace's most prized art, including the Phrabang, cast of a gold, silver and bronze alloy. This Buddha stands at 83 cm tall and weighs around 50 kg.

Visit Wat Visunalat (Wat Visoun), the oldest operating temple in Luang Prabang, with a collection of gilded wooden Buddhas from the 15th and 16th centuries.

Visit That Pathum, one of the more unusually shaped stupas in Luang Prabang.

It is affectionately called ‘That Makmo’ by locals, meaning Watermelon Stupa.

Visit Wat Xieng Thong, on the banks of the Mekong River, the most beautiful monastery in Luang Prabang, showcasing the best of Lanna art and artefacts.

In the afternoon enjoy an excursion to Kuang Si Waterfall. This multi-tiered waterfall tumbles over limestone formations into a series of turquoise pools.

Enjoy swimming in the clear water or just relaxing.

Visit a local village (Ban Ou or Ban Na Ouane) on the way, before returning to Luang Prabang.

Day 4: Luang Prabang – Oudomxai

Head north from Luang Prabang to discover this beautiful corner of Laos.

Travel through the scenic Laos countryside, stopping at minority villages, Tad Lak Sipet Waterfall and Ban Song Cha en-route to Oudomxai.

Oudomxai is the provincial capital and has a richly mixed population of Lao Theung and Lao Seung, Chinese and Lao Loum.

Off the main street there are traditional thatched houses spreading across the edge of the valley towards the base of the surrounding mountain range.

Sightseeing includes visits to the local market, Phou Phra That and panoramic views of Oudomxai from Phou Xay Hill.

Day 5: Oudomxai - Muang Sing

Travel from Oudomxai to Muang Sing.

The town of Muang Sing, home to the Thai Lue people, draws people from around the region to trade, including Thai Dam, Lao Huan, (Lenten), Akha, Hmong, Mien, Lolo and Yunnanese.

Tour the town, visiting the local market, the main Buddhist Temples, Wat Xieng Jai and Wat Nam Kaew Luang, before striking out into the countryside and visiting some of the different minority villages in the area.

Overnight Muang Sing. Breakfast included.

Day 6: Muang Sing - Luang Nam Tha

Travel to Luang Nam Tha along winding roads through beautiful tropical forests while passing hilltribe villages en route.

The provincial capital of Luang Nam Tha Province is expanding rapidly in its role as a centre for commerce between China, Thailand and Laos.

Visit the local market and Phoum Pouk Pagoda, first built in 1624, now in ruins as a casualty of the American Indochina War.

Continue to the Luang Nam Tha Museum for an overview of the different ethnic minorities that inhabit the area.

In the afternoon, explore the many minority villages in the area, including a Black Tai Village.

The Black Tai are known for their silk production and weaving. Sometimes water wheels can be seen in the process of milling rice.

Continue to a 200-year-old Lenten village, whose inhabitants are known for paper making and indigo dyes; and a Khmu Village known for basketry and water gourds.

Day 7: Muang La – Nong Khiaw

Travel south through scenic countryside.

Visit Ban Na Yang, a village of the Thai Lue, known for their cotton weaving. Continue on to Nong Khiaw for overnight.

Day 8: Nong Khiaw - Luang Prabang

Return to Luang Prabang with sightseeing at Pak Ou Caves en-route.

These extraordinary caves are filled with Buddha images, of every style and material imaginable.

Overnight Luang Prabang. Breakfast included.

Day 9: Luang Prabang – Vang Vieng

Travel from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng, passing through Muang Kasi and Ban Phatang, and visiting local villages on the way.

Visit Tham Xang Cave. This cave, also called Elephant Cave, contains a few Buddha images and a Buddha footprint plus the elephant shaped stalactites which give the cave its name.

Note: Tham Xang Cave is NOT recommended from May to September due to high water level and a swift current as well as bad road conditions - Overnight in Vang Vieng

Overnight Vang Vieng. Breakfast included.

Day 10: Vang Vieng - Vientiane

One of the attractive features of Vang Vieng is the Nam Song River.

Experience the beauty of the Laotian countryside whilst floating down the Nam Song River at a peaceful pace.

Afterwards, visit Tham Chang Cave which was used as a bunker against marauding Chinese in the early 19th century.

Transfer on to Vientiane for overnight.

Day 11: Vientiane

The capital city of Laos, Vientiane, still feels like a sleepy city with relaxed charm, tree-lined boulevards and interesting temples and colourful markets.

Tour the many highlights of the city, including Pha That Luang, a gleaming golden stupa which is perhaps the most important national monument in Laos.

Visit Ho Pha Keo, the formal royal temple, now a museum with beautiful examples of Buddhist sculpture.

Visit the beautiful Buddhist Wat, Wat Si Saket and Patuxai, a monumental arch inspired by the Arc de Triomphe, but executed with Lao motifs.

Overnight Vientiane. Breakfast included.

Day 12: Vientiane – Bolaven Plateau - Tad Lo

Transfer to the airport for your flight to Pakse where you will be met on arrival.

From Pakse, head east across the Bolaven Plateau, a fertile coffee and tea growing area.

This area is rich in ethnic groups, predominantly Laven.

En-route to Paksong on the western edge of the plateau, visit Tad E-Tu Waterfall.

Continue to Tad Fane Waterfall, the highest in Champasak Province, and then to nearby Tad Yuang Waterfall.

Afterwards head north towards Salavan with some short stops at minority villages with a visit to Tad Lo and Tad Hang Waterfalls.

Overnight Tad Lo. Breakfast included.

Day 13: Tad Lo - Pakse

Travel from Tad Lo and visit Tad Pha Suam Waterfall, a vast horseshoe shaped waterfall that sends water down in several cascades.

Continue to an Ethnic Museum and Katu Village before returning to your hotel in Pakse.

Day 14: Pakse - Chapasak - Don Khong

Champasak is a small district of 38,000 people on the western bank of the Mekong.

The Angkor period ruins of Vat Phou Champasak lie 8 km south of town.

Continue by vehicle to the Vat Phou Museum and Vat Phou itself, a Khmer temple site spread over the lower slopes of Phu Pasak.

The surviving structures date from as early as the Chenla Kingdom (6th to 8th centuries).

From Pakse, journey south along the east bank of the Mekong to Don Khong.

Explore Don Khong (Khong Island), a scenic island set in the middle of the Mekong River, with small villages and rice paddies.

Visit the largest village and local temples, before sunset at Muang Sene.

Day 15: Don Khong - Pakse

Depart Don Khong to Khone Phapheng, the largest waterfall in Southeast Asia and one of the most impressive sites in the area.

Here, the entire Mekong with all its force cascades down curving stone outcroppings and tints the massive stones with rainbows.

Continue north by vehicle to Pakse.

Founded by the French in 1905 as an administrative post, the capital of Champasak Province is a relatively new town at the confluence of the Mekong and Se Don rivers.

Spend the day exploring the highlights of the town, including the local market, Wat Chomphet Theppanimit, Wat Phou Salao, Wat Luang, Wat Tham Faai and the Champasak Historical Heritage Museum.

Transfer to your hotel for overnight.
