Situated in mature forest with views of floodplains and reedbeds, Duba Plains Camp is one of the Okavango Delta’s most remote camps.

The camp is small, unpretentious, rustic and intimate and sits in a private 30,000 hectare concession known as the Kwedi Reserve.

Small shady paths lead through the trees to six roomy tents that are comfortable, with lots of thoughtful touches, such as wildlife books and amarula for nightcaps.

Each tent at Duba Plains has an en-suite bathroom, an outside shower and a shady veranda overlooking the floodplain.

The thatched lounge, dining and bar area is raised on platforms and along with the adjacent swimming pool offers beautiful views.

Activities at Duba Plains Camp include day and night drives, often tracking the buffalo herd or various lion prides on the concession.

Guests can also take part in nature walk to get a better feel for the wilderness and mokoro trips are offered but usually only between May and September.

Six roomy tents offer lots of nice thoughtful touches such as wildlife books and nightcaps.

Game drives, nature walks and mokoro rides (May - September) are all on offer.

Lion kills are not unusual sights at Duba Plains, one of the Okovango's most remote camps.

What’s so Special?

Duba Plains Camp is ideal for those looking for a more remote experience, as the camp is right in the northern reaches of the Okavango.

Lion kills are a relatively frequent sight in the Kwedi Reserve as there are numerous buffalo and lion. A stay at Duba Plains is arguably all about lion and buffalo.

Filmmakers Derek and Beverley Joubert filmed ‘Relentless Enemies’ here, a wildlife film documenting the lives of lion and buffalo in the Kwedi Reserve.

Also of note is that Duba Plains Camp is owned by the local community and leased to the local operator.

Bear in mind

Duba Plains Camp isn’t ideal for children as pathways aren’t raised and balconies on the rooms aren’t suitable for small children.

Duba Plains Camp is reached by a short flight from Maun followed by a five minute transfer.

Children aged 7 – 12 years must be booked as part of a booking of the whole camp.

Children under 7 years are not allowed at Duba Plains Camp.

Kwedi Concession

Duba Plains Camp is located in one of the most isolated regions of the Okavango Delta

in what is known locally as the private Kwedi Concession, which comprises 90 000 hectares (220 000 acres).

Situated on one of the low, sandy islands common to this region, Duba Plains Camp is surrounded by a wide variety of landscapes.

The western area of the concession, notably large Duba Island, has open, seasonally inundated floodplains, open grasslands and small palm islands.

These habitat types are often isolated from the mainland by deep waterways and interspersed by dense mopane bushveld and savannah.

The Okavango Delta has this rich diversity of habitats and lush fertile grasses as a result of year-round availability of water, with the summer rains and winter

Water inundation stimulating the environment. Duba Plains Camp supports a resulting abundance of wildlife, which is unique even with the pristine and scenic backdrop of the iconic Okavango Delta.

It is the battle between the three resident prides of lion and the thousands of buffalo that move through the area for which Duba Plains is most renowned.

Aside from this eternal struggle between the two ‘Relentless enemies’, there are other fascinating species in the region. Aardwolf sightings are one of the specialities of Duba Plains.

Red lechwe, elephant, tsessebe and warthog share the Duba landscape and hippo concentrate in the deeper channels.

The area often has productive spotted hyaena dens that, when occupied, offer unique viewing of the family life of this carnivore, whilst leopard can be found on the forested islands.

Jackals (typically side-striped), bat-eared fox and leopard often roam the Duba islands.

Most of the Okavango Delta's renowned birdlife can be found around Duba Plains, including swamp boubou, Hartlaub's babbler, rosy-throated longclaw, black coucal (summer) and swamp nightjar.

During the annual inundation, the abundance of waterbirds is simply astounding, with a multitude of herons, slaty egret, long-toed lapwing and jacanas on show.

Wildlife at Duba Plains Camp

Duba Plains Camp is located in the 30, 000-hectare private Kwedi Reserve. While famed for its lion and buffalo interaction, the area has a lot more to offer.

Herds of elephant feed on the islands and hippo wade out into the deeper channels, tsessebe and wildebeest dot the plains, while red lechwe are found on the fringe of the wetter floodplains.

Aardwolf sightings are a speciality; spotted hyaena can also be seen.

Birdlife is abundant and impressive with regional specials like rosy-throated longclaw, slaty egret and wattled crane often sighted.

First Time to Africa

First time visitors to Africa will enjoy the opportunity to see lion kills, elephants browsing on the tree islands of the delta and spotted hyena resting in the shade of a tree during the day.

Travelled Before

There is much of interest for the second or third time africa safari hand. There are many small carnivores to look out for such as the bat-eared fox.

Hippo make us of many of the water channels and cheetah are in the area.

Seasoned Travellers

The aardwolf is one of Duba's iconic species and side-striped jackal are one of the smaller carnivores often spotted.
