Jao Camp is one of the top luxury camps in the Okavango Delta and is a great option for couples looking for a luxury honeymoon in Botswana.

Jao Camp is set on a remote island in the central region of the Jao Concession, an area of stunning scenery and beautiful islands fringed with riverine forests.

A masterpiece of design and architecture, Jao Camp is original, romantic, exotic and stylish and is one of the most luxurious camps in the Okavango.

Jao camp has nine spacious, beautiful tents each individually handcrafted.

Set right up in the trees they consist of a living room, bedroom and bathroom with beautiful Victorian bath.

In addition to the dining area and lounge, Jao Camp also offers two plunge pools and an outdoor boma for dining under the stars.

Activities at Jao Camp include mokoro excursions, boat trips, nature walks and game drives by day and night.

The two hides on the concession makes for wonderful and uninterrupted game viewing.

What’s so Special?

Jao Camp feels very secluded, set amongst shady trees, surrounded by plains and waterways.

The design of Jao camp has been carefully thought out and the camp is dramatically designed and very stylishly furnished throughout.

This is one of the most picturesque area of Botswana and ideal for both photographers and birders.

Bear in mind

With just 9 luxury tents, it seems strange to suggest that Jao is a large camp, but the feel is less intimate than many of the luxury camps in the Okavango.

Children aged 8 – 12 years are permitted if a private safari vehicle is booked.

Children under 8 years are not allowed at Jao Camp.

Jao Camp offers lavish tented accommodation, amongst the very best in the Okavango Delta.

The tents at Jao Camp are built on raised decks and each has a private thatched sala ideal for relaxing during the heat of the day whilst enjoying beautiful views of the spectacular surrounding floodplains of Botswana.

Tents feature seating areas with huge sofas and large mosquito-net draped beds, with views of the wilderness beyond.

A nice feature is the concertina doors, which maximize the views.

Bathrooms feature twin vanities, a fabulous oversized claw foot bath and an outdoor shower with a view.

When to go

Jao Camp offers a mix of both land and water based activities. Land based activities are mostly game drives with some wallking safaris, whilst water based activities include safaris by mokoro or boat.

Between January and March, activities are mostly land based (90%).

In April there is a mix of water (30%) and land based activities with mostly land based activities (60%) from May to July.

In August, the percentage of water based activities gradually subsides through to the end of the year.

Jao Concession Widlife

The game viewing at Jao is superb.

Huge herds of red lechwe can be seen, followed by their primary predator – prides of lion.

Other game typical of the area includes elephant, buffalo, leopard, tsessebe, zebra, hippo and crocodile as well as the uncommon sitatunga and spotted-necked otter.

Many bird species are resident such as Meyer's parrot, African harrier hawk, black heron, coppery-tailed coucal, and black crake being some of the avian treasures found at Jao Camp.

First Time to Africa

Jao Concession has a breeding herd of elephants and large numbers of leopard.

The lions in the Jao Concession have been extensively studied and hippos are always a delight.

Travelled Before

There is much of interest for the second or third time africa safari hand.

There are huge herds of Red Lechwe and birders may look out for Pel's Fishing Owl, Lesser Jacana and Malachite Kingfisher.

Seasoned Travellers

Even seasoned safari connoisseurs will find the wildlife in Jao Concession top rate. In addtion of course the Okavango Delta is a prime amphibian site.

The Jao Concession

The Jao Concession is 60 000 hectares in extent and is in the North western area of the Okavango Delta, situated below the Okavango Panhandle.

The Moremi Game Reserve forms the eastern boundary of the Concession.

Situated in the very heart of the wetlands of the Okavango Delta, the Jao Concession embodies all the magic and mystique of Botswana with vegetation that varies from permanent swamps to dry land. In the east the Jao Flats boast water channels that

cut their way through the papyrus and reed beds, providing the perfect environment for wildlife. Beautiful lush palm islands dot the water.

Further west, the area gets progressively dryer and Hunda Island, which is the tip of a large 'sand tongue,' is the largest area of dry land in the Jao Concession during the inundation (July-Sept).

Hunda Island has sandveld vegetation supporting many species of nutritious acacia and grewia shrubs, which in turn provide excellent browsing.

Around the Jao Flats, spectacular herds of red lechwe are followed by their predators – lion and leopard. Hippo and Nile crocodile are regularly sighted.

Other game includes blue wildebeest, impala, tsessebe, southern giraffe, elephant, hippo and crocodile, spotted – necked otter and even the occasional sitatunga.

The drier west harbours similar species, with greater concentrations of Burchell’s zebra and blue wildebeest.

Birding is exceptional in the Jao Concession: Vulnerable wattled crane, slaty egret, rosy-throated longclaw, Pel’s fishing-owl, and lesser jacana are found on the eastern side, with the western drier areas hosting crimson-breasted shrike, Dickinson’s kestrel and Meyer’s parrot.
