La Selva Amazon Ecolodge
Located near the Napo River, by the shores of Lake Garzacocha, two hours from Coca, La Selva Amazon Ecolodge & Spa is one of the best luxury lodges in Yasuni National Park.
The main building has an spacious area one level up which serves as a lounge, restaurant, and bar, with sofas offering views across the water and other sitting areas for conversation.
Activities follow a schedule determined by the wildlife – up early, perhaps to visit the treetop observatory where colourful toucans and macaws are at their most active; or instead depart for a canoe excursion along the lakeshore to see various monkey species.
Back at the Napo River are clay licks popular with parrots, and where it’s possible to visit a local village, experience life along the waterway and have a go with a blowgun.
Evening activities on offer include night hikes, sunset boat trips when the bats are heading out, or hikes to see other animals that come out after the heat of the day.
During the day, head out kayaking, swim in the lake, enjoy a spa treatment, take a visit to the butterfly farm on the property or just relax around the lodge.
18 suites, constructed with local materials are set in buildings spaced across the grounds at La Selva.
Scenic Suites are spacious, with water-view balconies and indoor sitting areas.
Superior Suites are similar but without the view, while the three Family Suites have more spacious bathrooms, a Jacuzzi on the deck or porch, and a hammock.
Dining is of a very high standard here. Breakfast and often lunch are served buffet style, with fresh ingredients, including lots of local fruit and other produce.
Dinners are more formal and served a la carte.
What’s so Special?
The Lakeside setting means that in addition to jungle walks and bird–watching from the canopy, there are also terrific views that change throughout the day, plus many excursions which follow the lakeside.
The second level sitting area has a high–powered telescope for zooming in on the birdlife.
Bear in Mind
After 30 years of operation, the lodge was totally overhauled in mid–2013 under new ownership.
Despite all the water, mosquitoes are not really a problem as the constant movement of the water together and acidic jungle run-off helps to keep them at bay.
Getting to La Selva requires some effort: after landing in Coca it’s a two–hour motor boat ride down the Napo River, followed by a short walk and canoe ride, but the journey is well worth it!
Day 1: Quito - La Selva Amazon Ecolodge
Transfer to Quito Airport for your scheduled flight to Coca.
After a short (35 minute) flight to Coca, you will be met and transferred to the pier.
La Selva Lodge is located in the heart of the Amazon basin, transfer time from the pier to the lodge takes about 2 hours.
The ride itself is fun and interesting! A box lunch is provided for guests on the ride.
The motorized canoe cannot go into the lagoon where the lodge is located, so you will disembark on the river for a short walk and a ride in another, smaller canoe.
Your luggage will be handled for you. Once you reach the lodge, there is a welcome drink and brief orientation meeting.
Then you will be shown to your spacious rooms and given the chance to rest and explore a bit before dinner at 7:30 pm.
During dinner, your group and guide will discuss the activities for the following day.
After dinner, depending on the weather, there may be a short activity such as night wildlife walk or canoe ride near the lodge to see some wildlife.
Many guests prefer to relax in the lounge with a cold drink from the bar or have a soothing massage in the spa!
Overnight La Selva Amazon Ecolodge. All meals and activities included.
Days 2 - 3: Exploring the Amazon Rainforest
There are a number of activities that you might do, including a visit to the parrot clay lick, a trip to a local community, or an excursion to the observation tower to see birds and monkeys.
A delicious lunch is served in our dining room at 12:30 pm.
After lunch, guests can take a nap or read a book during the hottest hours of the day.
Afternoon activities tend to be more low-key than morning ones.
You might go for a canoe ride around the lagoon. Again, the activity will be decided at the last moment by the guide, depending on conditions.
A gourmet dinner awaits in our dining room as afternoon turns into evening.
Overnight La Selva Amazon Ecolodge. All meals and activities included.
