Mesa Stila (formerly Losari Spa Retreat & Coffee Plantation) is a wonderful and unique luxury wellness retreat about 2 hours drive from the World Heritage Site of Borobudur on the Indonesian island of Java.
The coffee plantation was founded in 1922, and turned into a boutique hotel in 1992. The plantation is still producing coffee as well as organic produce, which is used in the Mesa Stila's restaurant.
This classic colonial Dutch plantation is a great location for touring the area, which includes really great sights such as Borobudur, Prambanan and Java’s stunning volcanoes.
There are just 32 rooms at Mesa Stila and a privately run steam train, which offers occasional tours through the local countryside.

Each of Mesa Stila’s 32 villas is unique. They are all located on the hilltop in the middle of the plantation and are all reconstructed from original Javanese Limasans, Joglos or Kudos houses.
There are four villa categories; each category’s name describes its location or the sweet perfume of the surrounding flora.
Plantation Villas
These One Bedroom Villas (80 sq. m.) are the original plantation bungalows – fully restored.
Each one has an en-suite living area as well as bath & bedroom.
Arum Villas
Each of these One Bedroom Villas (100 sq. m.) has large bathrooms and verandas with volcano views.
Ambar Villas
These spacious villas (135 sq. m.) offer luxurious accommodation for two, but can accommodate up to four people as they have the added facility of an adjoining smaller room.
Bella Vista
The main house at Bella Vista used to be home to a Javanese Prince. The five villas are located together and have a private pool.
The Mesa Stila kitchen team thrives on using fresh organic fruit, vegetables and spices grown on the plantation.
Java Red
Dine inside or outside and enjoy a fusion menu of Mediterranean specialties and Indonesian favourites. Open from 8am til 11pm.
Java Green
Overlooking the infinity pool and the volcanoes, Java Green offers an eclectic mixture of cuisine, using Mesa Stila's fresh organic produce.
The Plantation Bar
Perfect for evening drinks whilst soaking up the sunset or playing billiards in full view of Mts Sindoro and Sumbing.
Facilities:
Octagonal Swimming Pool designed after the swimming pools of Javanese Princes.
The Mayong Reception Centre is in an 1878 fully restored train station.
The Club House is the original 1928 plantation house. It has been completely restored and houses many Javanese artefacts and antiques.
Afternoon tea is served daily on the veranda (Wi-Fi is available). Mesa Stila has a small boutique with a range of items for sale.
The Lounge – a covered patio from which to watch the world go by.
The Kids Club provides English-speaking day care services for your little ones. Private babysitting is also available for which charges apply. The Spa and spring fed Pool offer total relaxation.
The Hammam Turkish Bath is a popular spot to relax.
Activities:
Mesa Stila offers a number of activities geared around Wellness and an understanding of the local cultures.
Activities include tours of the Coffee Plantation, cycling, steam train rides, yoga and local dance lessons.
- Daily Plantation Tour - learn about the coffee growing and harvesting processes and visit the organic herb and vegetable gardens
- Griya Sehat – Indonesian self-healing exercise takes place daily at 7am and 5pm
- Hatha Yoga daily at 8 am
- Tennis on Mesa Stila’s own tennis court
- Croquet in the garden
- Chess/Backgammon – giant chessboard available in the garden.
- Jamu – Visit Aren Palm Grove and sample Jamu – Indonesia’s traditional herbal, healing drinks.
- Lessons are available in traditional dance, cooking, gamelan and even in textile appreciation. (charges apply)
- "The Queen of the Mountains" steam train – ride through the Javanese countryside.
- "Kedung Kayang Waterfall Hike" – through rice paddies and low hills.
- "Exclusive Borobudur Temple" - Experience sunrise atop one of the world’s greatest Buddhist temples in complete serenity.
- "Gedung Songo Shrines" – pony rides.
- "Royal Baths" - hot spring water in an original Majapahit royal bath lost in the middle of breathtaking rice fields.
- Visit Prambanakan and Yogyakarta.
