Permai Rainforest Resort

Permai Rainforest Resort is only 35 km from the centre of Kuching, at the end of Santubong Peninsula, one of Sarawak’s premier beach holiday locations.

Covering 44 acres and set in the Borneo rainforest, close to popular Damai beach and the legendary Mt. Santubong, Permai Rainforest Resort is a great option for a nature retreat in Borneo, within easy reach of Kuching.

10 Tree Houses and 23 Cabins make up the accommodation at Permai, amongst the rainforest.

A 5-minute walk from the Resort is the Sarawak Cultural Village, a living museum that showcases Sarawak’s rich cultural heritage. The Cultural Village is open daily from 9 until 5 with cultural shows twice a day.

What’s so Special?

The Tree Houses are 20 feet above the ground placing you in the forest canopy.

Sleeping amongst the trees and waking to the sound of the sea lapping against the shore is an experience not to be missed.

Cabins

The 23 cabins are spread throughout the resort beneath the trees and are a more budget option, ideal for families or small groups of friends. The emphasis is on practicality.

Single storey cabins have two rooms with 3 beds in each and a separate wash area with toilet, shower and washbasin.

Only 3 of the cabins are air-conditioned although being so close to the sea keeps things cooler at night.

The Double Storey cabins can accommodate up to 10 people in 3 bedrooms, making these idea for families or groups of friends. There are 2 bathrooms, one on each floor.

The cabin has 3 single beds in each of the downstairs bedrooms and a double bed and a single bed in the upstairs portion. The upstairs bedroom is air-conditioned.

Tree Houses

The air-conditioned Tree Houses sleep 2 and have either a Queen sized bed or 2 Super Single sized beds.

All feature en-suite bathrooms.

Tree House Features:

  • Air Con
  • Tea & Coffee making facilities
  • Fridge & drinks

Rainforest Café

The cafe is located on the hillside and provides an excellent view of the seaside. In the evenings, the view of the sunset is superb.

The café is mostly surrounded by trees; making it possible to see squirrels and birds or the occasional whip snake slithering through the trees.

Most of the set menus consist of local dishes but Western style and vegetarian meals are available.

The barbeque and buffet on the beach at sunset is memorable. All prepared food is halal and cooked without the use of MSG.

Typical local dishes include garlic butter prawns, midin belacan, ayam pansoh and roti canai. Some of these dishes are exclusively Sarawakian and are cooked the local way - simple, spicy and tasty using fresh local ingredients.

Meals are served at locations all over the resort in addition to the cafe.

Dolphin watching

This trip takes you out to observe the shy and rare Irrawaddy Dolphins feeding in the Salak River mouth before heading out to Satang Island for some snorkelling and lazing around on a tropical island beach.

There is a turtle hatchery operated on the island by the Sarawak Forestry Corporation and occasionally you get to see baby turtles that are measured and counted before being released into the sea.

The trip includes a packed lunch and a bottle of mineral water but not landing fees for the island.

Mount Santbong Climb

This climb takes you through the rainforest and a waterfall on your way to the summit 810 metres high.

The first two thirds of the way is relatively easy going but as you get to near the top, the route becomes vertical and you climb rope ladders leading you to the summit and a spectacular view of the outlying area.

There is always the chance of seeing wildlife along the way including proboscis monkeys, large lizards and interesting flora. The usual time up and down is approximately 6 hours.

Coastal kayaking

This guided day trip takes you out along the Santubong Peninsula during the day to Teluk Belian beach. The beach at Teluk Belian is the ideal place to stop for a rest and enjoy your packed lunch.

Keen kayakers have the option of continuing beyond Teluk Belian beach to the tip of Santubong Peninsula, Tanjung Sepang and onwards to the next beach at Teluk Pasir on the other side of the peninsula.

The trip is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and explore the beautiful Santubong coastline and affords you beautiful views of the Santubong mountain range.

Occasionally White Bellied Sea Eagles, Brahminy Kites and even Rhinoceros Hornbills can be spotted flying along the mountainside.

Very fortunate kayakers may see turtles, giant otters or even the Irrawaddy dolphin.
