The luxurious Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero Camp is set on the northern edge of the Chobe National Park in an area of teak forest and offers just 15 free-standing cottages with views over the Chobe River.

Chilwero, means ‘place of high view’ in the local language, and the lodge is located high above the Chobe Riverfront, with superb views acres the river and flood plains.

For a boutique luxury safari camp, Chobe Chilwero has impressive facilities including a split-level pool and fantastic spa. This creates a feel more akin to a luxury escape than a traditional safari camp, but the setting is absolutely wonderful.

Chobe Chilwero offers a great chance to see Chobe’s elephant populations of course, but is also great for spotting hippo and buffalo in the Chobe River. Game drives into Chobe mean a great chance of predator spotting.

The main public area at Chobe Chilwero includes a lounge and dining room, which are linked to outdoor viewing patios.

Spacious rooms feature private gardens and indoor-outdoor showers.

What’s so Special?

Chobe Chilwero has the only fully-fledged spa on the Botswana Safari circuit giving an extra dimension to a stay here. One of the treatment rooms is even set amongst the treetops. Chobe Chilwero is therefore an ideal choice for those looking to combine top rate wildlife viewing with some serious pampering.

Chobe Chilwero has a great reputation for quality dining and a great choice of wines.

The location is absolutely stunning – one of the best in Botswana as well as being one of the most accessible, meaning a stay here can easily be combined with a visit to Vic Falls.

Bear in Mind

Chobe Chilwero is probably not for the traditional safari camp connoisseur as the lodge offers a split-level swimming pool and a spa. The lodge is fenced at the front but not obtrusively so and animals can still wander through the grounds.

The Chobe Riverfront is a superb game viewing region but its accessibility means it is a busy area. If a secluded wilderness experience is key, then Chobe Chilwero may not be the right choice. Alternatively make Chobe Chilwero the first luxury game lodge on your Botswana tour, as things may seem a bit too busy here after staying in more secluded camps first.

There is no age restriction on children. Children 5 years and under are not allowed on activities unless sole vehicle use is requested and is still subject to management discretion. Children under 15 years must share a Suite with parents or an adult.

Bungalows

Rooms offer large bathrooms with indoor and outdoor showers and huge free-standing two-person bath-tubs.

Glass doors open onto greenery at the front whilst at the rear, private gardens complete with outdoor shower and hammock offer a lovely area to relax after game drives or enjoy private dining.

The 15 bungalows are split between 6 King-bedded and 9 twin-bedded suites, each 61 sq. m. in size.

Features:

  • Sala or private balcony
  • Mosquito nets
  • Air-Con and fan
  • Hairdryer
  • Mini-bar
  • Safe

Dining

Chobe Chilwero has a great reputation for quality dining, superb service and a great choice of wines.

The views over the river front from the restaurant are superb and many guests linger long over meals.

The wine cellar is temperature controlled and houses a large variety of the finest South African and European wines.

Facilities:

Spa facilities including an indoor spa bath, Vichy showers, hydrotherapy, plunge pool, relaxation area and private treatment rooms - one of which is elevated in the treetops.

The lodge also boasts a split-level swimming pool, library, curio shop and a communications centre, which offers telephone, and Internet access.

A fully complimentary laundry service is offered daily.

Sundowner Cruise

The best way to end a day of safari here is sipping on a cocktail while watching an African sunset over the still waters of the Chobe River from the comfort of one of Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero’s specially designed riverboats.

Sundowner cruises are also a great way of seeing buffalo up close as they come out of the shade to graze in the cooler evenings and elephants as they wade in the river.

Chobe is renowned for its abundance of dramatic sable and roan antelopes with their impressive horns. Sitatungas - antelope with splayed feet to help them run in swamps - are often seen here, as are the wild dog and lion that prey upon them.

Photographic Safari Cruise

Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero’s safari boat can seat up to 18 guests and has a lower and upper deck, both featuring 360-degree swivel seats.

The upper deck offers a great vantage point of the Chobe River and wildlife while the lower deck boasts a bar area and the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a scrumptious river breakfast or lunch.

The boat offers a great exclusive and intimate alternative to enjoying the Chobe area especially for photographic enthusiasts.

Game Drives

Elephants feature largely on any activity at Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero, as the largest population left in Africa occupies this northern corner between Botswana, Zambia, Namibia and Zimbabwe.

Game drives in open-sided 4 x 4 vehicles bring these grey giants into easy reach as they drink and frolic at the water's edge in their boisterous herds.

Thrilling game drives led by qualified professional guides bring you close to hippos, buffalos, puku and other animals that gather on the banks of the Chobe River.

The puku, a small rusty-brown antelope, alongside impala, kudu and red lechwe, are only a few of the common antelope found here. Naturally, lion and leopard are also found in the area.

Climate & Clothing Suggestions

The “wet” season normally begins lateDecember and lasts through early March. This season characteristically has hot sunnydays with afternoon thundershowers.

This season is favourable for the viewing of newborn mammals, summer flowers and the migration of rare birds. Predator viewing during this time remains quite good.

The “dry” season runs from late March to early December. The days are nearly guaranteed as fine and the temperatures vary according to season.

In winter (June–August) temperatures can plummet as low as zero degrees at night at night with a daily maximum of 26 degrees.

In autumn (April-May) temperatures are warmer, ranging from 10 to 32 degrees.

Spring (September–November) tends to get hotter again with temperatures ranging between 15 and 38 degrees.

The drier winter months between June and November are considered to be peak game-viewing months.

Clothing

Clothing should be cool and comfortable. Jerseys and heavier jackets are required for winter mornings and evenings. Muted colours are the most suitable on safari.

Long sleeves and long trousers are advisable for morning and evenings due to mosquitoes. Sturdy and comfortable shoes are essential.
