The Last House

Sri Lanka’s Last House is a beautiful 6-room beach hideaway in Sri Lanka, nestled on the stunning southern coastline and offering barefoot luxury in a private location on undeveloped Mawella Beach.

The Last House is so named, as it was the final design of the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa and after its conversion into a boutique hotel now offers intimacy and space for families and couples.

The Last House is also well placed for trips to Galle, for whale watching and for leopard safaris in nearby Yala National Park making it a great base for a more active holiday.

Décor throughout is largely a mix of fresh white walls and grey polished cement floors, serving as a backdrop to a mixture of antique and contemporary furniture, all adorned with bright colours.

Bedrooms enjoy views of the sea or a lagoon, set in tropical gardens with a central swimming pool and comfortable loungers.

What’s so Special?

The Last House offers beachfront chic, space, ventilation and barefoot luxury in a tranquil location.

The grounds are very peaceful, the beach unspoilt and the atmosphere very relaxed.

The Last house can be booked in part or as a whole house, and is staffed (including a chef) to accommodate up to 14 guests.

Bear in mind

No alcohol is served on the premises so if you drink you will need to bring oyur own alcohol or buy some locally.

There is a choice of booking the Whole House, The Cinnamon Hill Suite, or one of the 3 rooms; Moonamal, Atteriya and Na.

The Whole House

Incorporates all six rooms and can be booked at anytime during the year. This is ideal for larger families or a group of friends.

Cinnamon Hill Suite

On the upper floor, the Cinnamon Hill Suite is spacious, comprising one large Double Bedroom overlooking the sea and garden and a large en-suite bathroom with WC, shower, iron bathtub and double basins.

There is a balcony area at the side and front of the room also overlooking the beach, which is well suited for private dining.

In addition, there is one large Twin en-suite Bedroom also overlooking the sea and garden.

Connecting to and sharing the bathroom of the Twin Bedroom, is a further small Twin Bedroom (without views to the sea) available if required. It is particularly suitable for accompanying children.

Moonamal

On the ground floor and separate from the Main House, this large Double Bedroom overlooks the sea, with doors opening onto the front and rear gardens.

Moonamal has an en-suite Bathroom with WC, shower and basin – with access to an outdoor courtyard with a separate double-bath and shower area.

Atteriya

On the ground floor and separate from the Main House, this large Double Bedroom overlooks the sea, with doors opening onto the front and rear gardens. Atteriya has an en-suite Bathroom with WC, shower, and basin.

Na

On the ground floor, at the rear of the property and separate from the Main House, this large Double Bedroom primarily looks inland towards a small lagoon and its accompanying wildlife, with access to the rear garden.

It has expansive windows which overlook a wide area, as well as one smaller window framing a quintessentially Bawa view to the beach and sea. Na is en-suite with WC and shower.

Dining

Dining is al-fresco at the Last House, in a setting overlooking the pool and gardens.

Dinner might start with Ocean Crab Salad with Spicy Coconut Sauce or Lemongrass and Lime Leaves Seafood Soup: Main Fare from Crispy Skin Snapper Fillet with Coconut Lime and Dahl Sauce upon Mash to Rajasthan Mutton Curry with Pandan Steamed Basmati Rice and Fresh Coriander.

A full selection of Sri Lankan Curries of course remains popular and has the whole household doing their part in the kitchen.

All rounded off with a choice of desserts.

Lunch serves a variety of salads incorporating local lobster, prawns and tuna, a Mixed Tempura or Mezze Plate, or Seafood Risotto to name a few.

Breakfast (is included in all room rates) will typically offer subtle blends of fruit juices according to the season, eggs almost anyhow, pancakes, muesli, cereals and some galvanising Sri Lankan starts to the day, all with a selection of Sri Lanka’s renowned teas, or coffee.

Facilities

The Last House has a variety of beach games, bicycles, surfboards and a croquet set. For some exploration at sea, there is a small fishing-boat available for hire to take you fishing or snorkelling around the nearby bays and beaches.
