The Mudhouse

Nestled in sixty acres of forest in the ancient rural heartlands of Sri Lanka’s dry zone, two hours north of the airport, The Mudhouse is a private and seductive off the beaten track retreat.

The location is en-route to Sri Lanka’s cultural triangle makes this an ideal stop on the way to the ancient sites of Sigiriya, Anuradhapura and Dambulla.

Flanked by lakes and blessed with abundant birdlife, wildlife and natural beauty, The Mudhouse was selected by The Guardian as one of the 100 most romantic destinations in the world.

Nearby rock temples, the unique fishing village of Udappuwa and rarely visited ancient sites also make a stay at The Mud House a great complement to any tour of Sri Lanka.

The nearby Elephant Sanctuary and the Bird reserve at Anawilundawa also make excellent excursions.

What’s so Special?

The Puttalam region is an area with huge potential, largely untouched by tourism, making this area of Sri Lanka perfect for those looking to get a little bit off the beaten track.

The region is dotted with reservoirs (tanks) and has abundant wildlife, especially in Wilpattu National Park which makes a great day outing.

The Mudhouse has its own farm on site, where the majority of fruit and vegetables used in meals are sourced.

Guests are welcome to get involved, be it with planting, watering or picking the produce!

Bear in mind

There is no mains electricity at The Mudhouse.

The Mudhouse consists of a number of clusters of uniquely designed huts spread throughout 60 acres of forest land. The huts range from a traditional village house to a tree house, all constructed with natural materials sourced locally.

Each structure is designed with comfort and relaxation in mind. Whilst all the layouts differ, the facilities are the same

All huts have outdoor showers and indoor bathrooms with sinks and western toilets. The ‘extra bathroom’ is the lake adjacent to the land and is great for swimming and bathing.

All huts have dining areas and spaces which can be used for yoga and meditation.

Lighting at night is provided by plentiful candles and lanterns.

The staff hut is equipped with solar panels and has a limited supply of both ac and dc power for charging batteries of any kind.

Dining

The Mudhouse has its own farm, onsite, where the majority of fruits and vegetables used in meal preparation is grown.

The Mudhouse serves a hearty range of Sri Lankan cuisine.
