From Bogota fly to Neiva and explore the South west interior of Colombia, a region rich in heritage and tradition and dissected by the butterscotch Magdalena River.

Pass through the Tatacoa Desert and spend two nights in San Agustin, visiting the nearby World Heritage archaeological site.

Day 1: Fly UK to Bogota

Overnight flight UK to Bogota.

Day 2: Bogota

Transfer to hotel for overnight.

Day 3: Bogota & Monserrate

After breakfast, enjoy a half-day visit to the historic centre of Bogota known as La Candelaria.

Visit Plaza de Bolivar, the Cathedral, the Capitol, and the Botero and Gold Museums.

Afterwards enjoy a cable-car ride to the Santuario de Monserrate, a symbol of Bogota with panoramic views of the city.

Day 4: Bogotá - Neiva – San Agustin

In the morning, transfer to the airport for a short flight to Neiva.

On arrival, visit the town of Villavieja and the Museo Palenteológico, before heading on to the Tataco Desert crossing crevasses eroded by wind and water.

After lunch, take a scenic 4-hour journey along a paved road to San Agustín with views of the extensive floodplains of the Magdalena River valley, passing fruit, maize and coffee plantations.

Day 5: San Agustín Archaeological Park & Alto de los Idolos

In the morning visit San Agustín Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

See the enormous stone statues up close and walk on the ceremonial Fuente de Lavapatas before heading up the hill to the Lavapatas terrace and a remarkable view over the surrounding countryside.

Also visit the small Museo Arqueológico before lunch.

After lunch, visit the rural town of Isnos to visit two other important archaeological sites Alto de los Ídolos and Alto de las Piedras.

In Alto de los Idolos appreciate the funerary complexes with some of largest stone figures and the most well preserved tombs that still show some original paintwork.

Day 6: San Agustin – Neiva – Cartagena

Transfer by car for about 4 hours to Neiva airport for the flights to Cartagena, via Bogotá.

On arrival transfer to your hotel.

Enjoy a City Tour beginning with a panoramic view of the city from the Monasterio and Iglesia de La Popa.

Continue to the San Felipe Fortress, erected in honor of the poet from Cartagena, Don Luis Carlos López.
