This is a unique opportunity to spend a week on safari in Zambia’s premier safari park, the South Luangwa National Park with time spent exploring the park and tracking big game on a walking safari.

This itinerary is ideal for the adventurous walking safari enthusiast as this is as close to the real African wilderness as one can get, on one of the very best walking safaris in Africa.

You can look forward to staying in some of the best safari camps in Zambia and being guided by some of the very best walking safari guides in Zambia.

This is remote Africa at its best, with stunning locations where you are unlikely to see any other vehicles or people in the wildest and remotest parts of the bush.

The trip begins with 3 nights at Tafika Camp in the northern Nsefu sector of the South Luangwa National Park.

The camp is located on the banks of the river offering a relaxing and peaceful base to enjoy walking safaris and game drives. Micro lighting safari may also be possible.

The next 4 nights are spent on walking safari deep inside the northern areas of the South Luangwa Park following the fabulous Chikoko Trails. Stay overnight at Chikoko Tree Camp and Crocodile River Camp.

Chikoko Trails is ideal for those looking to get as close to the bush as possible.

Walks between camps are combined as part of a morning safari activity, with porters carrying luggage. Walks can last 3-4 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the afternoon.

Good sightings of leopard, lion, buffalo, elephant and zebra, as well as Cookson’s Wildebeest and Thornicroft Giraffe can be expected.

An exotic relaxing beach extension in Malawi can easily be added to this itinerary.

Chikoko Trails consists of two separate boutique camps and specializes in exclusive walking safaris in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park.

Chikoko Tree Camp and Crocodile River Camp are both situated inside the South Luangwa National Park and can accommodate up to six guests each.

Walking safaris follow naturally formed hippo trails and explore the area that David Livingstone ventured through back in the late 1800’s.

Chikoko Tree Camp has three chalets situated on stilts high amongst the tree canopy, shaded by ebony and sausage trees and offering great views.

Crocodile River Camp by contrast is set beneath a grove of ebony trees beside the Crocodile River. Three round chalets look out onto the dried Crocodile River course, frequented by zebra, impala, elephants and warthog. The camp waterhole also regularly attracts leopard.

What’s so Special?

Being on a walking safari in South Luangwa offers the opportunity to get much closer to the bush than on a game drive.

Walk beside a Thornicroft’s Giraffe, feel the weight of a sausage tree fruit, examine the detail of a fallen weaver nest or track leopard prints – a walking safari gets you so much closer to nature.

Follow in the footsteps of David Livingstone who came through this area in the late 1800’s.

Bear in Mind

An expert and experienced guide, armed scout and tea bearer accompany walks, offering great insight into the area and wildlife.
