Southern Laos

Southern Laos is one of the most interesting regions of Laos, with historic sites, ancient temples, the Mekong River, waterfalls, diverse cultures and beguiling landscapes.

With Luang Prabang and the far north grabbing most of the headlines, Southern Laos is only now slowly emerging as an area of great interest to rival the attractions of the north.Wat Pho offers a World Heritage Temple site dating back 1500 years, Don Khone Island reveals a glimpse of sleepy Lao River life and the Phapheng Waterfalls is the largest cascade on the lower Mekong.

Cruising on the Wat Pho River Cruiser is a great way to see this region of Southern Laos in comfort. The lively town of Pakse is the main gateway to Southern Laos and is not without it's charms as more and more people are discovering.

Bolaven Plateau Loop

Discover southern Laos’ most beautiful scenery with this Full Day Tour of the Bolaven Plateau. Explore the cascading waterfalls of Tad Lo and Tad Fane, visit a local coffee plantation and witness the unique lifestyle of the Plateau’s hilltribe people.

Take a short orientation tour of Pakse beforedeparting for the Bolaven Plateau, a mountainous region home to dozens of hilltribes, waterfalls and coffee and tea plantations.

The first stop is at Tad Lo Waterfalls, a beautiful formation of three separate falls. From the bridge see Tad Hang and then Tad Lo in the distance. The most impressive of the three, Tad Suong, is located a further 10 km upriver.

After exploring the falls and their surroundings continue through the Plateau with a stop en-route for lunch.

This afternoon, continue to Tad Yuang and Tad Fane waterfalls. Tad Fane is a set of twin 120-metre high waterfalls formed by the merging waters of the Champy and Pak Koot rivers. These impressive falls are situated on the edge of Dong Hua Sao protected area, 38 km from Paksé. Water levels can vary according to the season and level of rain.

On the drive back to Pakse stop to visit a tea or coffee plantation, or perhaps both if there is time. Laos is known for its famous coffee, the majority of which is grown on the Bolaven Plateau. A visit to one of the plantations will reveal the process of planting, harvesting and roasting coffee.

Return to Pakse in the late afternoon and transfer to your hotel.

Pakse, Wat Phou, Champassak

Discover the hidden charm of Southern Laos in this half-day tour from Pakse, which encompasses visits to the ancient temple ruins at Wat Pho and to quaint colonial towns of Pakse and Champassak.

World Heritage designated Wat Phou is a ruined Khmer Hindu temple complex. Pakse and Champassak are tranquil towns notable for their French colonial buildings.

After breakfast or lunch, enjoy a short walking tour of Pakse, which will reveal some nice remnants of the French period.

Drive to Wat Phou alongside the Mekong. Atmospheric Wat Phou is a pre-Angkorian temple built upon three levels. The lower level is focused on the Baray (water reservoir) and the promenade, which joins the second level with the galleries and the quadrangular pavilions. The upper level is the sanctuary itself.

After your visit, return to Champassak to see examples of French colonial architecture before crossing the Mekong to reach the main road to get back to Pakse.

4000 Islands

Venture through the tranquil islands of the Mekong River in Southern Laos on this full day discovery tour. Visit the remnants of the 100-year old French Railway, explore tumbling waterfalls and bike around tranquil islands.

Depart from your hotel at around 9 am for this full day trip through southern Laos’s 4000 Islands Region. Called ‘Siphandon’ in Lao, this breathtaking area is where the Mekong River reaches 14 kilometers wide and thousands of small islands dot the waterway.

From Ban Nakasan, travel by local boat along the Mekong to the peaceful islands of Done Det and Done Khone where there are no cars and no regular electricity supply.

Cycle around the laidback islands and experience the tranquility of the area. Pass between rice fields, peaceful river scenery and scenes of local daily life. Cycling around Don Khone and Don Det is a great way to observe the lifestyle of the southern Lao people.

Travel on to the abandon tracks of Laos’ only railway. At the end of the 19th century, the French built the railway to cross the waterfalls of the Mekong River and connect Laos and Cambodia. Today, only remnants remain but it’s still an atmospheric place and also offers great views of the area.

Continue to beautiful Lippi waterfall and on to Khone Papheng, a set of stunning falls marking the border with Cambodia. This is the only stretch of the Mekong River that is not navigable by boat as evidenced by the tumbling, turbulent waters.

Return across the river by boat and continue by road Pakse to arrive back late in the afternoon.

There is around 4 hours driving and 40 minutes on a boat on this excursion.
