Ibo Island lies within the Quirimbas Archipelago of northern Mozambique and has been described as one of the most unique and atmospheric islands in the world.

There is more than just beach life on offer at Ibo Island Lodge which opened at the end of 2006. One of the best things about a holiday in this part of Mozambique is the chance to explore and enjoy this historical island, once part of the slave trading route and later used as a Portuguese administrative outpost.

Ibo Island is home to just 3,000 people, has a very atmospheric old town and is an island where dhows are still built on the beach, and local craftsmen keep their skills alive in village workshops.

Ibo Island Lodge offers luxurious accommodation and features three magnificently refurbished colonial-era mansions with high lofty ceilings and individually designed bedrooms.

The main building at Ibo features spacious verandahs, which are a lovely spot to enjoy a drink or just relax at any time of the day on a lounger with a book or magazine.

The gardens are a very nice feature at Ibo, as is the long infinity edged swimming pool over-looking the ocean.

What’s so Special?

A holiday at Ibo Island Lodge is more than an Indian Ocean beach holiday. The free cultural walking tours exploring the history of the island and its life today are highly recommended.

Less than thirty minutes from Ibo Island Lodge, a sand-spit offers a pristine stretch of beach which can be visited for breakfast or lunch beneath a tented canopy – the ultimate romantic Indian Ocean beach location. The beach here is great for snorkelling also and the trip to the sand-spit is free of charge.

Ibo Island Resort also offers excellent sea kayaking trips through the local mangroves, a great chance to experience the local eco-system and spot some wildlife.

Finally, the resort has created significant employment and skills for the local population, and this ethos has been at the centre of the resorts operation.

Bear in mind

Ibo Island is not a private tropical island, but is ideal for those looking to combine some beach time with a slice of history and real African life.

The beach right in front of Ibo Island Resort is fairly small and not private. Many guests prefer to take the transfer to the beautiful private sand-spit island.

Ibo Island is reached by a 20 minute flight from nearby Pemba Island which has regular connections from Johannesburg, Nairobi and Dar-es-Salaam.

Eight of Ibo Island Lodge’s rooms are located in the Niassa Mansion and are a mix of elegant minimalism and local character.

Air-conditioned en-suite rooms all feature character four poster or twin beds and are tastefully furnished with oriental artifacts. Bathrooms are spacious and feature twin vanities.

Dinner at Ibo is served either in the dining room, on one of the Lodge’s many verandas, or on the roof top terrace all of which boast wonderful views over the ocean and the to-ing and fro-ing of the local dhows.

Tea, coffee and muffins are brought to your room in the morning at guests requests – to be enjoyed on the private verandah.

Ibo Island Lodge has a strong reputation for dining, especially its seafood dinners.

Ibo Island Lodge offers plenty of activities to keep guests busy, including a large swimming pool, watersports and excursions by Dhow.
