Ilha de Mozambique is a small coral island less than 3 km long and under 2 km wide, with the town of Mozambique as its main population centre (just 7,000 people).
Mozambique is the oldest European settlement in East Africa. Ilha (pronoucned 'Iliya') as it is known to locals is a sleepy but attractive destination with plenty of historic character and colonial era buildings.
Sao Sebastao Fortress is often described as the most imposing fortress in Africa and well worth visiting.
