Phnom Penh

Cambodia’s capital is often overlooked as visitors head straight to Angkor Wat in the north.

Phnom Penh is well worth a visit however as the city has some lively markets, impressive temples and a great little museum which will elucidate much about the magnificent monuments further north.

On a more sobering note, the Killing Fields memorial is a moving testament to more recent events and an important place to visit to really understand modern day Cambodia.

Phnom Penh is essential on any tour of Cambodia - don't miss it.

The Killing Fields & Tuol Sleng

Just outside Phnom Penh, in a peaceful rural setting, the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek provide a stark reminder of the atrocities inflicted on Cambodia under the Pol Pot regime.

Thousands of people were killed here between the years of 1975 and 1978 and buried in mass graves.

Learn more about this chapter from Cambodia's recent past at Tuol Sleng (Museum of Genocide). Formerly a High School, in 1975, this became the interrogation and torture facility for the Khmer Rouge regime.

Although this Half Day excursion seems quite a ‘morbid’ trip, it is for most visitors a quite moving experience and an important step in understanding modern day Cambodia where almost every family was in some way affected by the Pol Pot regime.

Takeo

Enjoy a Full Day Tour from Phnom Penh to the provincial capital, Takeo, including a visit to Tonle Bati, Ta Prohm, Phnom Chisor, Angkor Borei and Phnom Da. This is a great way to see the area around Phnom Penh.

Tonle Bati is a lake south of Phnom Penh, with a beach and the impressive laterite temple of Ta Prohm, a 12th century temple built by King Jayavarman VII.

Phnom Chisor is the main temple, occupying the hilltop and constructed of laterite and brick with carved lintels of sandstone. The inscriptions found here date back to the 11th century and the wooden doors to the sanctuary are decorated with interesting carvings.

Angkor Borei is a 6th century monument built in laterite by King Rudravarman of Funan and is one of the few remaining sites with traces of the Kingdom of Funan (a kingdom influenced by India and thought to have spread as far as southern Burma and Indonesia).

Phnom Da is a hill south of Angkor Borei with four artificial caves, built as shrines. On top of the hill is a square laterite tower.

A Day with The Bears

Spend the day learning about the 100 sun bears that have been rescued from captivity and relocated to Phnom Tamao. Go behind the scenes and learn what it takes to become a bear keeper, with plenty of hands-on practice time.

Travel by private vehicle to Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre, located an hour’s drive from Phnom Penh, and the world’s largest sanctuary for sun bears. The Rescue Centre has educated hundreds of thousands of Cambodians about the threats facing their wild bear populations.

On arrival meet the staff at Free The Bears, located within Phnom Tamao. Free The Bears is a registered charity that was set up by an Australian lady, Mary Hutton to protect, preserve and enrich the lives of bears throughout the world.

The 100 plus bears at Phnom Tamao have been rescued from exploitation for food and medicine. Twenty one forested enclosures have been built over 7 hectares to house a mixture of Sun and Asiatic Black Bears of different ages and personalities.

After visiting the various different bear houses take part in a fun activity of preparing toys for the bears. There will also be time to visit some of the other endangered species kept at Phnom Tamao.

Lunch is at a simple local picnic hut ‘Khmer style’. In the afternoon it’s time to hide the food in the bear’s forest enclosures and watch them enjoy the fruits of your labour.

Leaving Phnom Tamao drive the short distance to visit Tonle Bati Temple, a small but very picturesque Angkorian style temple that remains largely intact.

On the way back to Phnom Penh stop to try some local seasonal fruits, before arriving back in the early evening.

Note: please note that direct contact with the bears is not possible under any circumstances; these are rescued wild animals. It is recommended to bring closed footwear, sunscreen and suitable clothing for a day in the forest.

On this tour you will meet one of these extraordinary survivors. Chum Mey, who has written about his experiences, will take you on a personal tour of the cells and share his harrowing personal experiences with you.

Chum Mey is one of only 12 known survivors of Tuol Sleng. Now in his mid 80's it is a privilege to hear his experiences at first hand.

The Royal Palace & Silver Pagoda

Cambodia’s Royal Palace mostly dated from the 20th Century, but is an impressive place to visit and a must-do on any tour of Phnom Penh.

The King still lives here so it's very much a working palace - only part of it is open.

Be sure to see the Silver Palace with it's beautiful jewel encrusted Buddha statues and its stunning silver tiling.

National Museum

Phnom Penh's National Museum is the biggest in the country and is home to a superb collection of Khmer Art and Ceramics.

During the Khmer Rouge period from 1975-79 the Museum was left abandoned and in a state of complete disrepair, with a rotten roof and colonised by bats. Most museum curators and staff were killed by the Khmer Rouge.

Nowadays the National Museum is a great source of pride and a visit will really help you to understand Cambodian history and culture - especially if you are able to visit before going to the Temples at Angkor.

Tuol Sleng & The Killing Fields

On a more sobering note, the Killing Fields memorial is a moving testament to more recent events and an important place to visit to really understand modern day Cambodia.

Pol Pot declared intellectuals, the wealthy, professionals and city dwellers enemies of Cambodia and this former school building (Tuol Sleng) was used as a detainment and torture facility during the genocide of 3 million Cambodians in the late 1970's.

It's a dark and sombre visit but we think it's an important one to make.

Wat Phnom

Wat Phnom dates back to the 14th century and is the oldest part of the city.

Wandering through the various stupas and monuments at Wat Phnom is definitely worthy of a visit, especially as it's so close to the riverside.

The Markets

Phnom Penh has some attractive markets which are well worth exploring.

The Russian Market is one of the most famous markets in the city. It's a great place to shop for branded clothes which are produced locally for export and for various arts and crafts.

The Central Market in Phnom Penh is protected by a beautiful art-deco dome, making it worthy a visit for that alone.

It's also a great place to shop for jewellery, precious stones and gold and silver.

Riverside Promenade

Be sure not to miss a stroll along the river at sunset - along the Western Quay, where the Mekong and the Tonle Sap Rivers meet.

Sunset cruises are available or you could just have drinks at the FCC or enjoy a stroll and some people watching along the riverside parade.
