Tokyo

Tokyo is the world metropolis supreme with over 35 million residents in greater Tokyo. A stay in Tokyo can be overwhelming without some planning but there is enough to engage visitors for 2 or 3 days as a minimum.

Highlights of Tokyo include the historic areas of Asakusa and Ueno, the neon sky-scape of Shinjuku (think ‘Lost in Translation’), youthful Harajuku and Shibuya and the chic Maranouchi-Ginza district and the greenery of the Imperial grounds.

A morning visit to the world’s largest fish market is also a highlight of any stay in Tokyo.

Full Day Hakone & Mount Fuji - shared

See majestic snowcapped Mount Fuji, discover the picturesque Japanese countryside, enjoy a sky gondola tour, visit a ‘boiling’ valley and cruise a volcanic crater lake during this fascinating full day excursion to Hakone & Mount Fuji.

Leave Tokyo in the morning for Mount Fuji and Hakone. Driving by coach along the Tomei Expressway, admire the picturesque scenery of rural Honshu and the skyline dominated by the mythical Mount Fuji, which on a clear day can be seen from Tokyo some 100 km away.

Enjoy a grilled chicken lunch at Hakone Lake Hotel (a vegetarian menu is available on request). In the afternoon, enjoy a sightseeing tour by coach around Hakone, which is famed throughout Japan for the Hakone Gongen Shinto shrine, and hop aboard a sky gondola for unbeatable views of the calm waters of Lake Ashi, Mount Fuji and the volcanic clouds of the Owakudani Boiling Valley.

Visit the Boiling Valley itself, site of a crater where you can smell sulphurous fumes and see clouds of steam rise from crevasses. You may also hear of a hard-boiled way to live longer! Finally, release your inner child with a scenic pirate ship cruise across the peaceful Lake Ashi, enjoying the serene natural beauty of the crater lake, under the shadow of the magnificent Mount Fuji. The ships are modelled on traditional medieval vessels.

Next is Asakusa, Tokyo’s old town where you can soak in the atmosphere of the Tokyo of old. Visit Senso-ji, Tokyo’s oldest temple and wander down Nakamise, a shopping street that has been providing temple visitors with a variety of traditional, local snacks and tourist souvenirs for centuries.

Half Day Tokyo Pop Culture - Private

Take in 3 of Tokyo’s centers of youth fashion and pop culture. Start in Shibuya, Tokyo’s main center for youth fashion and culture, whose streets are the birthplace to many of Japan's fashion and entertainment trends and home to the famous 5-way 'scramble crossing'.

Next is Harajuku, and the famous Takeshita dori (Cat Street). Whether you are a goth, punk or anything in between, there is a shop in Harajuku that caters for you.

Known as Electric Town, Akihabara was originally famous for its many electronics shops. However, in more recent years, Akihabara has gained recognition as the center of Japan's otaku (diehard fan) culture, and many shops and establishments devoted to anime and manga are now dispersed among the electronic stores in the district.

You will end the afternoon doing one of the following three activities: 1) playing with cuddly cats at a cat cafe, 2) visiting an owl cafe for a chance to see these highly photogenic creatures up close, or 3) enjoying a cup of coffee or tea in one of Tokyo’s famous maid cafes where the waitresses dress up and act like maids.

Half Day Old Tokyo Walking Tour - Private

This afternoon, explore Tokyo’s shitamachi (downtown). Our image of Tokyo is usually that of a super-modern metropolis but suburbs like Yanaka, which was miraculously spared the carnage of the Allied bombings in World War II, still preserve a nostalgic atmosphere.

Part of its charm today lies in this sense of being hidden. Visit old temples and shrines, one of Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist cemeteries as well as traditional shops selling Japanese paper and sweets, and soak in the atmosphere of pre-war Tokyo.

Take a look at what life in this area used to be like in the Shitamachi Museum, located in Ueno Park.

One of the most popular parks for hanami (cherry blossom parties) in Tokyo, Ueno Park was originally part of Kaneiji Temple, which used to be one of the city's largest and wealthiest temples and a family temple of the ruling Tokugawa clan during the Edo Period.

Your guide will take you on a stroll to show you the many attractions that enrich this large park.

Last stop for the day is Ueno’s Ameyoko-cho, a busy market street underneath the train lines.

Originally the site of a black market after World War Two, this bustling market is the last of its kind in Tokyo, and is filled with shops and stalls selling various products such as fresh fish, dried food and spices.

At one of the many open-air restaurants under the train tracks, you can stop for a cold drink and a yakitori (grilled chicken skewer).

Half Day Tokyo East Tour - Private

Enjoy a half day tour of Tokyo accompanied by an English speaking guide, using local transport to get around. You will be collected from your hotel to begin this tour of Eastern Tokyo, finishing up in fashionable Ginza.

The Tokyo Skytree is one of Tokyo's most well-known landmarks. With a height of 634 metres, it is the tallest building in Japan and was the second tallest structure in the world at the time of its completion.

A large shopping complex is located at its base. Enjoy the spectacular Tokyo view from the observation deck, the highest of its kind in Japan and one of the highest in the world.

Your next destination is Ryogoku, which is known throughout the country as the main hub for Sumo. Visit the Sumo Museum, located in one of Japan's largest Sumo stadiums and learn about this fascinating and highly ceremonial sport.

However, as the museum is on the grounds of the Sumo Stadium, there may be days on which the museum is closed due to preparations for sumo tournaments.

In this case, you will visit the nearby Hokusai Museum, dedicated to the famous ukiyo-e artist, Katsushika Hokusai.

His most well-known work, The Great Wave off Kanagawa, is most likely the first image that comes to mind when one thinks of Japanese art.

Lastly, if time permits, enjoy a stroll in Ginza, Tokyo’s most elegant shopping mecca, and visit a department store’s basement food floor where you can marvel at all the delicacies on sale and their beautiful presentation.

Half Day Tour Garden & Fire - Private

Journey to the Eastern part of Tokyo, Fukagawa district – a serene and charming area. Enjoy a guided stroll in the beautiful Kiyosumi Teien gardens and visit Fukagawa Fudo-do Temple and see a local ceremony.

The first location to be designated a site of scenic beauty by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, Kiyosumi Teien gardens date back to 1721 when the area was a villa for a feudal lord.

In the late 19th century it was purchased by Iwasaki Yatarō, founder of the Mitsubishi Corporation, who used his company ships to transport 50 precious stones here from all over Japan and set them around a pond ringed with Japanese black pine, hydrangeas, Taiwan cherries and other plants designed to make the garden look splendid throughout the year.

A walk through this charming residential district will take you to the Fukagawa Fudo-do Temple. This large temple’s main object of veneration is a statue of Fudomyo – a fierce-looking representation of the Buddha’s determination.

Visiting the temple itself is a very solemn and unique experience, but the highlight is the spectacular goma-kito ceremony.

In this ceremony, a Buddhist priest burns consecrated wooden sticks in a large fire to give protection and make the wishes of those who offered the sacred wood come true.

You will be able to observe the ceremony from close by and watch as the chief priest chants sutras and other priests play the taiko drums.

Full Day The Future is Tokyo Tour - Private

When the sprawling metropolis that is Tokyo ran out of space, they inevitably turned toward the sea. Odaiba is a man made island created by massive landfills, featuring many hypermodern and strange buildings.

Among the exhibition pavilions, indoor shopping malls, game centres, cafes, restaurants, and surrealistic constructions of Odaiba, the visitor never fails to be intrigued by the structures on this landfill that seems to hail from the future rather than the past.

Here you will visit the Museum of Emerging Science, a highly interactive and bilingual science museum includes exhibits about environmental issues, robots (starring Asimo among others), information technology, biology and space exploration.

Mega Web is a giant Toyota showroom that shows off all of Toyota's latest models, car accessories and technologies.

The Panasonic Center is a showroom for the latest products and technologies by the Panasonic Corporation. On display are the newest cameras, TVs, computers, videogames, home appliances and more.

Back to the mainland, visit Akihabara, Tokyo’s Electric Town. Akihabara is famous for its hundreds of electronic shops selling a mindboggling range of gadgets, gizmos, and devices that one way or another plug into the world of electricity as we know it.

However, in recent times, Akihabara has become even more famous for its “Otaku” culture. These are young Japanese who are “obsessed” with cosplay, manga, anime, gaming, or other aspects of Japanese culture, and now there are stores in Akihabara that cater to all Otaku!

End your day in Hamarikyu garden, an Edo Period Japanese garden surrounded by the Shiodome district’s futuristic skyscrapers, a great example of how Japan is the land of contrasts, where you will stop for a cup of steaming matcha and Japanese sweets in a tea house on a small island in the park’s lake.

Full Day Tokyo Traditional - Private

Travel by public transport accompanied by an English-speaking local guide on a full day Traditional Tokyo tour including the Imperial Palace, a Tea Ceremony, the Meiji Shrine, Omotesando and Shinjuku.

The Imperial Palace is located on the former site of Edo Castle, a large park area surrounded by moats and massive stone walls in the center of Tokyo, and the residence of Japan's Imperial Family.

Although the Palace is not open to the public, from Kokyo Gaien, the large plaza in front of the Imperial Palace, you can view the Nijubashi, two bridges that form an entrance to the inner palace grounds.

The stone bridge in front is called Meganebashi (Eyeglass Bridge) for its looks.

Next, you will have the unforgettable opportunity to participate in an authentic tea ceremony. Sample freshly made green tea in a Japanese style tearoom. The tea masters are always willing to instruct newcomers on the finer points of enjoying tea.

Meiji Shrine is Tokyo’s most famous shrine, dedicated to the spirit of the late Emperor Meiji, and the park that surrounds the shrine is a forest of some 120,000 trees of 365 different species.

The shrine is a popular site for Japanese Weddings: if you are lucky you may see a bride and groom dressed in traditional Shinto wedding attire.

Take a walk through Omotesando, commonly referred to as Tokyo’s Champs-Elysees. This broad, tree lined avenue features a multitude of fashion flagship stores designed by internationally renowned architects within a short distance of each other.

End the day at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku, one of Tokyo’s tallest and most distinctive skyscrapers.

The 243-meter-tall building has two towers, and each houses an observatory at a height of 202 meters, which provide good panoramic views of Tokyo and beyond.

With favorable weather conditions, famous landmarks such as Mount Fuji, the Tokyo Skytree, Tokyo Tower, Meiji Shrine and the Tokyo Dome can be seen from here.
