Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve
A little under 2 hours from Quito, Bellavista is an eco-lodge in Mindo, on a 700-hectare private cloud-forest reserve, which is a paradise for nature lovers and bird watchers.
Cloud forests cloak the steep slopes of the Andes from about 900 to 2,500 m - forests of high biodiversity, with a profusion of little-studied wildlife and plants.
Bellavista is located the southern edge of the Choco/Andean hotspots of biodiversity - that stretches from South-western Colombia to northwestern Ecuador and is part of the Mindo Area of International Importance for Birds.
The reserve has an extensive trail system (10 km of trails) and little-travelled dirt roads where there are always great birds to be seen, be it a good Tanager flock, speciality birds like Plate-billed Mountain-Toucan and Tanager-Finch, or strange calls inviting identification!
As part of your stay at Bellavista, we can arrange specialist birding or naturalist guides and organize all transportation.
The lodge itself consists of 13 rooms set in 4 different buildings. Rooms have lots of light and large windows, which offer maximum views of the forest.
What’s so Special?
Founded by a British and Colombian couple, Gloria and Richard, the lodge grew from humble origins to be an important conservation area, protecting the forest from the encroachment of cattle herders.
Bromeliads and orchids, hummingbirds and tanagers, toucans and antpittas all vie for attention, and a sense of adventure awaits on forest hiking trails en route to hidden waterfalls.
Bellavista and the Tandayapa Valley boast over 330 recorded species of birds including the Tanager-finch, Giant Antpitta, Swallow-tailed Nightjar, Plush-capped Finch, Beautiful Jayvand White-faced Nunbird which are all found here.
Bellavista's resident mammals include the endangered Spectacled Bear as well as the puma, Andean coati and tayra, and the newly discovered Olinguito!
