Ecuador & Galapagos Destinations
Amazon - Oriente
Getting up close to nature is the highlight of a trip to The Oriente (Eastern) region of Ecuador, where rivers tumble down the eastern slopes of the Andes and fill the tributaries of the Amazon.
Jungle lodges provide bases for discovering the wildlife of the Amazon; colourful toucans, the screech of howler monkeys, the reflected eyes of a Cayman in the dark.
Perhaps the very best mainland wildlife reserve in Ecuador, Parque Nacional Yasuni is one of the world most bio-diverse regions. A stay in a luxury lodge here or along the Rio Napa is one of the best wildlife holidays in Ecuador.
This area of Ecuador is also home to many indiginous people living along the banks of the Rio Napa and around Puyo closer to the Andes. Discovering the lives and culture of the indiginous people in this region can be a surprising highlight of a tour of Ecuador.

The most biologically diverse spot on earth
Yasuni National Park was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1989 and is the largest protected area of continental Ecuador and protects an impressive biodiversity in the heart of the Amazon rainforest.
It has been even said that Yasuni is the most biologically diverse spot on the whole of the planet.
The main attraction of the park is the Tropical Dry Forest and the lagoons of Tambococha, Jatuncocha and Anangu which together provide home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna.
The park is home to 150 species of amphibians – more than in the whole of the USA and Canada combined.
Over 120 reptile species have been recorded here, about one third of all reptile species in the whole of the Amazon.
382 fish species are found in the park, more than in the whole of the Mississippi River Basin.
Yasuni is home to many different species of bats, and bird species number over 600, a third of the total in the whole of the Amazon Basin.
100,000 different species of insect have been recorded in a single hectare at Yasuni (about the same as in all of North America).
Eco-lodges in Ecuador's Amazon
Choosing an eco-lodge in Ecuador’s Amazon can be a little bit confusing, as at first look many appear similar.
We feature only the best lodges in the Amazon.
Napo Wildlife Centre
The most luxurious eco-lodge in the Ecuadorian Amazon is situated by a lagoon in the Yasuni National Park and offers 16 rooms.
Activities include climbing the 40-metre high observation tower to view the rainforest canopy. Howler and capuchin monkeys, sloths, harpy eagles, toucans and tanagers can all be seen from here.
Napo Wildlife Centre is a great option for a luxury lodge in the Amazon.
Sacha Lodge
The 26-room Sacha Lodge also has high standards and is located in Sucumbios, on the north bank of the Napo River.
Toucans, harpy eagles, king fishers and woodpeckers are some of the bird species very common here.
The hotel has a 27 metre long footbridge, suspended 3 0 metres above the forest floor from which can be seen howler and spider monkeys, and harpy eagles.
Another attraction is the 4 metre-high wooden tower, built around a kapok tree, from where birds, mammals, insects and epiphyte plants can be seen.
La Selva Amazon Ecolodge
La Selva has been around for 25 years and is located on the banks of the Garzacocha Lagoon.
Bird watching is really excellent here because of the privileged location in the north of the Yasuni Park, the most biodiverse place on the planet.
There is a bird watching tour for early risers, which departs at 4 am.
Packages include visits to the observation tower, parrot feeding grounds (clay and mineral site), a trip to a local community, a canoe ride on the Garzacocha Lagoon and other activities in and around the hotel.
Sani Lodge
This mid-range eco-hotel is set in a corridor of 42,000 hectares of forest between the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve to the north and the Yasuni National Park to the south.
It is an extremely rich area for flora and fauna and on jungle treks you can fi nd up to 13 species of primates, Brazilian tapirs, peccaries, harpy eagles, black caimans and Amazonian manatees.
There are 10 rooms and 4 family cabins and the lodge has a nice observation tower.
