Little Kulala
Situated south of the Sesriem gate of Sossusvlei lies the exclusive, boutique Little Kulala, located on the private Kulala Wilderness Reserve. Little Kulala is one of the most luxurious places to stay in Sossusvlei, famous for the worlds tallest sand dunes.
Little Kulala Camp is set on the dry Auab River bed with dead acacia trees as the backdrop.
The camp consists of 12 thatched and glass-sided ‘kulalas’ built on elevated decks with views over the reserve and the magnificent red sand dunes.
Little Kulala offers early morning guided game drives to the spectacular dunes of Sossusvlei and guided drives and walks on the private Kulala Wilderness Reserve.
What’s so special?
Each climate-controlled ‘kulala’ has its own private bathroom with indoor and outdoor shower, veranda and a private plunge pool.
A stay here really brings the feeling of the desert close, and the views of the red dunes are magnificent. Each ‘Kulala’ has a rooftop ‘Sky Bed’ for sleeping under the stars and enjoying some star-gazing.
Dining under the clear Namibian skies is also a real highlight of a stay at Little Kulala.
Kulalas
‘Kulala’ means ‘sleep’ and is also the name of the thatched cottages, which merge into the desert landscape.
Each cottage features a private plunge pool on a private deck, indoor and outdoor showers and a rooftop sky-bed.
There are 11 double ‘kulalas’ and one family ‘kulala’ which consists of two interconnecting chalets.
All of the Kulala’s are on raised platforms and so offer views of Sossusvlei’s spectacular sand dunes and a waterhole frequented by wildlife such as hyena.
In addition to drives and walks in the reserve, many guests enjoy quad biking in the Kulala Wilderness Reserve or hot air ballooning above the magnificent landscape.
There are several walking trails around the reserve including the popular Black Mountain Trail.
A visit to Deadvlei in the early hours is a great opportunity for photographers to capture the magical light at this time of day.
An entertainment area includes a library, wine cellar, craft shop, lounge and restaurants.
Desert-adapted wildlife such as ostrich, springbok and gemsbok eke out an existence and are sparsely distributed around Little Kulala.
Larger carnivores, namely spotted and brown hyena and even cheetah are occasionally present, while smaller creatures such as bat-eared fox and aardwolf can be seen at night in the cool desert air.
The dune lark has its entire global distribution limited to the area, so dependent is it on the area's characteristic sands.
A wide range of insects, reptiles and rodents make their home in this arid land; the call of the barking gecko at twilight is the quintessential sound of the desert.
