DMZ & Phong Nha
DMZ & Phong Nha Tour
From your hotel in Hue, head north to the Ben Hai River, once the demarcation line between North and South Vietnam to visit the Vinh Moc Tunnels.
Unlike the more famous Cu Chi Tunnels near Saigon, the Vinh Moc Tunnels were built essentially to shelter locals from the intense bombing of the region during the Vietnam War.
Afterwards head to Cua Tung Beach, a long secluded stretch of sand where the last emperor, Bao Dai used to holiday.
Visit Quang Tri, once an important citadel city in Vietnam but heavily bombed in the war.
Drive to Dong Hoi and visit Doc Mieu Base. Part of the former McNamara line - this base was once part of an elaborate system intended to prevent infiltration across the DMZ.
On the second day enjoy an excursion to Phong Nha Cave (Dry and Wet Caves) with a boat trip.
From Phong Nha Cave, visit Tien Son Cave and Bi Ky, Fairy Cave and the Imperial Palace, caves known for their stunning stalactite formations.
As with all of our Vietnam tours, this short DMZ and Phong Nga trip can be adjusted to suit your interests, time and budget and can be incorporated into a longer Vietnam tour.

Day 1: Hue - Dong Ha - Dong Hoi
From your hotel in Hue, head north to the Ben Hai River, once the demarcation line between North and South Vietnam.
Visit Vinh Moc Tunnels, almost 3 km of tunnels built by the villagers of Vinh Moc, in one of the most heavily bombed places in the whole of Vietnam.
The locals began tunnelling by hand into the red clay earth and made the tunnels their home.
After the tunnels, head to Cua Tung Beach, a long secluded stretch of sand where the last emperor, Bao Dai used to holiday.
Quang Tri was once an important citadel city in Vietnam. During the war it was heavily bombed and not many of the original buildings of the time are left, but a visit here is still a highlight.
Drive to Dong Hoi and visit Doc Mieu Base. Located on a low-rise ridge, south of the Ben Hai River - part of the former McNamara line - this base was once part of an elaborate system intended to prevent infiltration across the DMZ.
Today, you can still see the remains of bunkers, craters and shrapnel.
Overnight Dong Hoi. Breakfast included.
Day 2: Dong Hoi
Today enjoy an excursion to Phong Nha Cave (Dry and Wet Caves) with a boat trip.
The Phong Nha cave system is about 50 km from Dong Hoi. On arrival embark on a 5 km boat journey down the Son River, the world longest underground river, which winds its way through the cave system.
From Phong Nha Cave, visit Tien Son Cave and Bi Ky, a cave used of the Cham people in the 9th and 10th centuries as a Buddhist sanctuary.
On the way back to Dong Hoi, visit Fairy Cave and the Imperial Palace, caves known for their stunning stalactite formations.
A stop is also made at Suoi Mooc Spring before arriving back in Dong Hoi.
Overnight Dong Hoi. Breakfast included.
Day 3: Dong Hoi - Hue
After breakfast, return back to your hotel in Hue.
Vinh Moc Tunnels
Unlike the more famous Cu Chi Tunnels near Saigon, the Vinh Moc Tunnels were built essentially to shelter locals from the intense bombing of the region during the Vietnam War.
The American forces believed the villagers of Vinh Moc were supplying food and armaments to the North Vietnemese garrison on the island of Con Co which was in turn hindering the American bombers on their way to bomb Hanoi.
The idea of the intense bombing was to force the villagers of Vinh Moc to leave the area but as is typical in Vietnam there was nowhere else to go.
The villagers initially dug the tunnels to move their village 10 metres underground but the American forces designed bombs that burrowed down 10 metres.
Eventually against these odds, the villagers moved the village to a depth of 30 metres. It was constructed in several stages beginning in 1966 and used until early 1972.
The complex grew to include wells, kitchens and rooms for each family and spaces for healthcare. Around 60 families lived in the tunnels; as many as 17 children were born inside the tunnels.
