February is considered a perfect time to visit the West Coast of Malaysia, including Kuala Lumpur. Beach holidays to Langkawi and Penang are popular at this time of year, with long hours of sunshine and little rain expected. This is the driest time of the year on the West Coast of Malaysia.
By contrast the East Coast of Malaysia is in the grip of the Northeast monsoon at this time of year, which can be characterized by heavy rain, which although often concentrated in dramatic thunderstorms can also sometimes be more persistent.
Many East Coast Malaysia resorts close during February. Towards the end of February, the East Coast and the offshore islands usually see the effect of the monsoon diminishing and there can be several rain-free days.
On coastal Sabah, drier weather is becoming more apparent in February, making this a good time to visit the coastal areas. Further inland in Sabah rainfall can still be high during this period, at Tabin, in the Danum Valley, the Kinabatangan River and the southern Dive islands.
Sarawak receives a high level of rainfall in February and areas such as Miri and Mulu are not at their best during this season.
