A former residence of court nobles, Hoshinoya Kyoto was built from a riverside villa in Arashiyama, where its perfectly preserved scenery and architecture have been defined by silence, beauty and luxury for centuries.

Hoshinoya has inherited these qualities and continues to build on them, creating an experience that embraces the area's history with a good mix of luxury contemporary living.

Rooms are located in a renovated ryokan inn that was built 100 years ago on the former premises of Kyoto business tycoon Suminokura Ryoi's private residence. It was modernized just enough to ensure a very comfortable stay without sacrificing the heart of traditional Japanese architecture.

Hoshinoya’s design reflects the rich artistic traditions of Kyoto at every turn. Rooms feature superb woodblock prints, the grounds are beautifully landscaped and delicious Kaiseki meals are served in room.

Every guest room features paper furnishings known as karakami decorated by skilled Kyoto artisans using historical woodblock print patterns. Sliding doors and other traditional furnishings feature modern embellishments that make the traditional very useable indeed.

What’s so Special?

The setting and its changes throughout the season are part of the reason Hoshinoya is such a special place to stay – with cherry blossoms in the spring, lush greenery in the summer, red maple leaves in the fall and waterfowl in the winter.

All of these can be taken in from the comfort of the rooms – there is nowhere else in Kyoto with quite this setting.
