Luang Prabang’s most exclusive boutique hotel is part of Belmond (formerly Orient-Express) and the hilltop location offers breath-taking views of the mountains and Luang Prabang itself.
Set amongst delightfully lush and immaculately manicured gardens, Belmond La Residence Phou Vau is a chic and stylish oasis, which offers a very good excuse to linger longer in Luang Prabang.
With just 34 rooms, Belmond La Residence is an ideal size – small enough to be intimate but large enough to offer great facilities, with the backing of one of Asia’s top luxury hotel groups.
The French influence in Laos and at Belmond La Residence is evidenced in the restaurant, which serves up wonderful Lao, Fusion and French inspired cuisine in a romantic atmosphere, especially at night overlooking the lantern-lit gardens and pool.
What’s so Special?
The views from the room terraces and the swimming pool are fabulous. The pool is a real highlight, offering a great view over towards Mount Phou Si and plenty of opportunity to enjoy some sun.
Rooms have large private balconies and views, which are just as impressive as those from the pool.
Lanterns are lit in the evenings across the grounds and around the swimming pool creating a display of flame and light to evoke the romance of the Orient for diners on the terrace restaurant. It really is quite a sight.
Bear in mind
Getting into Luang Prabang is a lengthy walk (about a mile) or a short drive. Hotel tuk tuks offer free rides throughout the day.
The rooms at La Residence are furnished simply and elegantly, with an emphasis on local styles and materials. Shimmering rosewood furniture contrasts beautifully with the rich, natural cotton fabrics.
Timber parquet floors and Lao textiles in the form of wall hangings and cushions create a very local and stylish atmosphere.
‘Opium’ beds are hung with mosquito nets, and the large bathrooms are a big highlight here, with roomy free-form marble baths.
All rooms have a large private terrace with ‘opium bed’ loungers and views over the hills dotted with pagodas and stupas.
The different room categories are very similar and differ only according to the view – of the garden, pool or mountains.
Garden View Rooms
Located on the ground floor of the hotel, these easily accessed rooms are surrounded by flourishing Bird of Paradise flowers, Bougainvillea, Papyrus and Frangipani trees.
They offer views over the tropical gardens. Rooms are very light and spacious (over 60 sq. m.), with whitewashed walls, four-poster beds and large windows opening onto the gardens.
A Lao cotton sofa and low coffee table complement the living space, and each room has a spacious bathroom with terrazzo bath, double vanities, first class amenities and a separate W.C.
Mountain View Room
These rooms (over 60 sq. m.) offer dramatic views of the Old City of Luang Prabang and of the occasional rooftop amongst palm and coconut trees. Further away, facing your room, the magnificent Phou Si Temple rises over the town, set on a steep hill.
Rooms are otherwise the same as the Garden View Rooms.
Mountain Pool View Room
Mountain Pool View rooms overlook the dramatic infinity pool and the magnificent Phou Si Temple. Views at night, across the illuminated pool and the glittering temple opposite, are really spectacular.

Phou Vau Suites
Located on the first floor, the two Phou Vao Suites (over 70 sq. m.) feature a separate living room with a large cotton sofa. A spacious bathroom offers first-class amenities and a separate toilet.
Overlooking the gardens, the Suites are serene and spacious, ideal for long breaks or where space is a prime concern. With a double king bed and an additional single bed in the well-equipped living room, the Suites are finished in cottons, wood and local textiles.

Phou Savanh Restaurant
Offering a choice of indoor and outdoor seating, Phou Savanh Restaurant serves traditional Laotian cuisine alongside European dishes with local influences.
At night, enjoy the sunset over the treetops, and the romantic glow of candles and lanterns hung among the bushes and trees of the hotel gardens. The setting is very romantic indeed.
Cocktail Bar
The hotel's cocktail bar offers a comfortable indoor lounge and outdoor seating, with fabulous views over the swimming pool and beyond to the mountains, the perfect place for enjoying an aperitif while the sun sets.
The Doc Champa Bar
The Doc Champa Bar is on the ground floor near to the restaurant. With large comfortable armchairs dotted about this laid-back, open-air lounge area, this is a great place to meet for drinks before dinner.
Stay indoors for a sophisticated evening with friends or choose a table outside and enjoy the romantic sunset and the glow of candlelight reflecting off the swimming pool.
