Kalaw is a former British Hill Station town just 50 km from Inle Lake in the Shan State. Visitors head here to enjoy some outdoor activities such as trekking or cycling in the undulating hills around Kalaw.
The mountains here are cooler and scenic and home to several different hilltribe groups. Pindaya is also nearby, famous for cheroots and umbrellas.
Kalaw is an easily accessible destination for outdoor activities and is usually combined with a stay at Inle Lake.
The Shan State is a semi-autonomous area covering a large tract of Eastern Burma, mostly hilly plateau bordering Thailand, China and Laos. The 3 main cities are Lashio, Kengtung and Taunggyi.
The old British Hill Station of Maymyo (Pyin Oo Lwin) is a popular place for an overnight visit and Inle Lake is the most well-known destination but included in a separate section here.
