Macedonia is a scenic and mountainous region of northern Greece, the largest region of the country.
Macedonia was the birthplace of Alexander the Great who conquered half the known world in the 4th Century BC, spreading Greek influence as far as India and Africa.
Highlights of Macedonia include the Byzantine heritage of Thessaloniki; Pella, Alexander's capital, the beaches of the Halkidi Peninsula and Verginia (ancient Aigai), where Philip II was assasinated.
Of more esoteric interest is Mount Athos, home to a stunning collection of Byzantine Monasteries.
