Sri Lanka's Hill Country by Rail

Travelling through Sri Lanka's Hill Country by rail can be one of the most memorable experiences on a tour of Sri Lanka and something I recommend to most of my customers.

There are several ways of doing this rail journey but we usually include it as a half-day journey from Kandy to Haputale or Ella.

By Rail into Sri Lanka's Hill Country

The rail journey from Colombo, via Kandy and up into the Hill Country is not only extremely scenic but also offers a glimpse into the past.

The journey goes through charming old stations such as Ella where you really do feel like you've stepped back in time.

We typically book our clients on to one of the Chinese built blue trains which have been operating in Sri Lanka since 2012.

There are 3 classes on these trains. A second class carriage is pictured below. We usually prefer these Second Class carriages to the First Class carriages where the windows don't open.

Second Class carriages are comfortable and offer much better photographic opportunities, as well as the chance to meet some local people.

As the windows are usually wide open, the temperature is usually very pleasant and the seats in Second Class are very comfortable.

Enjoy the video below which will give you a great idea of what it's like to travel into Sri Lanka's Hill Country by rail.

We can tailor make any kind of Sri Lanka tour to suit your interests and look forward to helping you with your journey to Sri Lanka.
