The weather in Costa Rica in May marks the end of the 'dry season' for much of the country. Rain when it occurs usually comes in the form of afternoon showers or sudden downpours.
May is a transitional month for the climate in Costa Rica and as the weather gets a bit more uncertain, so the number of visitors decreases, making this quite an attractive time of year and one of the best times to visit Costa Rica.
May marks the start of the low season along the Pacific Coast, Monteverde and the interior of Costa Rica. Arenal Volcano can often be seen very clearly in May and June, without being shrouded in cloud.
Dirt roads can be impassable in parts of the country and a 4x4 may be required for self-driving in many parts of Costa Rica. Surfing conditions on the Pacific Coast are excellent.
