What's so Special?
Effortless style authenticity combine to make a winning formula. We just love the hotels within Galle Fort and this is definitely one of the finest.
This exotically romantic hotel mixes old world charm with a flair for design and great food.
There are 13 rooms at the Galle Fort including 4 Loft Rooms, 3 Garden Rooms and 6 unique suites.
The hotel feature 11 large and shuttered rooms and suites, including a blue and white suite decorated with Chinese porcelain, another with traditional Peranakan decor, and two-level loft suites with mosquite net swathed four-poster beds, opening off open sided galleries overlooking a beautiful courtyard.
The feel of the rooms is minimalist but extremely tasteful with great attention to both comfort and detail. Full information on each of the unique rooms is available.
Loft Suites
There are 4 two-storey Loft Suites which feature a romantic loft bedroom overlooking the garden and pool. The Loft suites have wonderful Four-poster wooden beds hung with a mosquito net.
The sitting room is elegant and comfortable and furnished with antique almaris, long cushioned settees and a round, antique, dining table.
Bathrooms have quality fixtures, Italian ceramics and floor to ceiling terrazzo. The spacious private veranda which overlooks the pool and garden is furnished with colonial-style furniture.
The Garden Rooms.
There are 3 Garden Rooms which have French doors opening onto a small private garden with a fountain. Rooms feature four-poster beds with luxurious cotton sheets and a canopied mosquito net.
Garden Rooms get booked early and only accommodate 2 people only.
The Blue and White Porcelain Suite
A fully air-conditioned suite with twenty foot ceilings and its own separate dressing/bathroom.
The monumental, Dutch windows and shutters open onto a spectacular, columned walkway which frames the courtyard, swimming pool and garden.
The towering, bedroom walls feature 18th Century, blue & white porcelain imported by the Chinese to the Galle area.
The antique Sri Lankan cabinets and four poster bed make this one of the most spectacular and romantic suites.
Le Grand Appartement du Comte de Mauny
This grand and massive apartment occupies the entire top floor of the old wing and has two fully air-conditioned king size bedrooms with their own attached bathrooms and oversized showers.
The 115 foot long suite is 22 feet wide (more than 2500 square feet in all) with its own private, full-length, colonnaded veranda with shuttered windows and is the largest hotel suite in Sri Lanka.
The Salon/Dining Room has views of the Churches, Mosque and Galle Harbour as well as majestic panoramas of the ancient, Portuguese, tiled rooves of the Fort. Private in-room dining is available at the eight-seater antique dining table.
Twelve inch teak floorboards and fifteen foot, lime- washed ceilings are part of an original design by the Comte de Mauny, the Edwardian 'faux noble' who lived and worked in Ceylon having fled his wife after she reputedly caught him in bed with the Valet.
An acquaintance of Oscar Wilde and Delacroix, in the 1920's his houseboys would ferry him to shore from Taprobane Island at low tide in his favourite armchair.
The apartment feature orginal artworks, antique chests and cabinets and two enormous Dutch, spiral, four-poster beds.
One bedroom has an attached bathroom and the other features a dressing room and vanity leading to an outdoor terrazzo shower.
The Cheng Ho Pavillion
To commemorate the visit of Admiral Cheng Ho to Galle in 1406 this oversized, double-storey suite, with six metre ceilings, has been decorated with antique Chinese and Peranakan fittings.
The fully air-conditioned, mezzanine bedroom has an antique-style, carved, Chinese, Opium-bed, 100 thread cotton sheets and mosquito net.
A screen made from rare, antique columns provides privacy from the generous living area below.
The two-storey outdoor bathroom has 6 metre columns with a huge, elevated waterfall shower which makes bathing seem like a fresh tropical downpour.
The Library Suite
This oversized, fully air-conditioned suite has two king size beds and a large seperate bathroom with a large, open shower.
Perfect for two people wanting a king size bed each.
The library houses a fine collection of Kandyan hat pins bejwelled with rough cut semi precious gems and glass as worn in the Kandyan Perahera by celebrants dressed as members of the royal family.
A matching chest and almirah of 'tiger'satinwood and 'king' ebony are the main feature of a very cosy sitting area which opens as a balcony onto the archway of the main building.
The Mews Suite
The staff quarters to the Markan Markar Villa occupied an entire lane running down the side of the East Wing.
Through a beautiful arched, double storey vault and behind a pair of huge wooden doors is Galle Fort Hotel's latest suite.
The Mews Suite is more like a tiny villa. As well as the benefits of all our suites: air conditioning, king size bed, talcum soft sheets and stealable pillows, the double storey Mews offers a huge outdoor daybed in its own private courtyard garden.
Upstairs the kids can hang out in their own mezzanine or share the large single, antique four poster.
Down the antique jackwood stairs is your large granite shower, the main king size bed and antique doors and windows which open the villa to the garden courtyard and the private entranceway beyond which is lined with giant Ginger Plants.
The Mews is somewhere you could bring the kids and let them make as much noise as they like without you having to worry about other guests.
In return you will be rewarded with the sounds of the other Sri Lankan families living in the staff lane; dogs will bark, you'll hear conversations in Sinhala, clothes being washed and even some Buddhist chanting.
And the joy of other kids playing cricket in the lane. Feel free to open the trellised gates and join in.
The Mews is your own tiny, private, and beautifully renovated villa in the Fort but with all hotel services and the pool just through the huge gateway and less than a stone’s throw away
