The capital of Sri Lanka is often by-passed by visitors heading straight to Sri Lanka’s beaches, the hill country or the historic cities. For those with a bit more time, Colombo will reward a little exploration.
Colombo has a lively market district in Pettah, some fascinating colonial churches and lovely Galle Face Green, a mile long stretch of open space for promenading and enjoying the sunsets or people watching.
Negombo is a Sri Lankan beach area and fishing town about 20 minutes from the airport. The area has a few sights of interest including the remains of Dutch canals and Portuguese churches.
The sight of the single-sailed fishing smacks heading out to sea every day is quite spectacular.
