Ghost Mountain Inn
At the foot of the legendary Ghost Mountain in Mkuze, Northern KwaZulu-Natal is Ghost Mountain Inn - a charming boutique country inn style hotel ideal for discovering the northern region of the KwaZulu-Natal coast.
This intimate hotel is the ideal location from which to explore the array of wildlife and coastal Game Reserves in Maputaland and South Africa’s Elephant Coast.
Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the abundance of wildlife and the scenic splendours of this rich and diverse region during game drives, guided walks, cultural excursions and boat cruises in the company of knowledgeable rangers.
Back at the hotel, the spa offers a range of skin and body treatments and healthy lunches in a tranquil environment.
Those who prefer the relaxing sound of birdsong and the warmth of the African sun will enjoy time by the pool within the beautiful gardens of Ghost Mountain Inn.
What’s so Special?
We really love Ghost Mountain Inn for the range of excursions on offer and the enthusiastic tour leaders and guides.
Bear in mind
The Standard Rooms at Ghost Mountain are quite basic although are being renovated in 2014. The Suites are recommended as an upgrade.
Ghost Mountain does get a few coach tour groups coming through, so the atmosphere does become a bit busier when a group is in house.
April and May are excellent times of year to be in Northern Zululand. The humidity is gone and the days are long and warm with cooler evenings to enjoy the crackling fire and the ocean of stars in the clear sky.
Garden Rooms
Garden Rooms are ideal for those needing more space and comfort. These are generously sized Superior Rooms featuring flat screen TV’s, pull-out sofas and relaxing lounge areas.
The open plan bathroom has a separate toilet and large shower. Private patios overlook the indigenous garden or the pool.
King-size or three quarter twin beds are offered with fold out sofas.
Suite
The spacious Suite offers great comfort and privacy. It features a large bedroom with an extra length King-size bed and a comfortable down duvet.
Both the bedroom and separate dressing area have large retractable doors to maximise the view of the Lebombo Mountains
The luxurious bathroom with a free-standing bath leads out into a private garden with an outside shower, while the living area has a separate guest bathroom.
Seasonal Menus with local ingredients are combined with traditional favourites and served either in the Dining Room, outdoors on the terrace or under the stars in the traditional Boma.
Roy's Bar
Roy’s Bar is a comfortable place to meet other travellers over a cocktail or gin and tonic, or just unwind and enjoy the comfortable African decor. Enjoy a glass of wine from the award winning wine list whist taking in the view of the swimming pool and gardens.
Fig Forest Walk
Although the Fig Forest Walk is only about two hours long the walk itself is situated deep in the Mkhuze Game Reserve so the activity includes a game drive to and from the walk.
This 5-6 hour walk is not strenuous but does require traversing two short swing bridges over the Mkuze River. The walk meanders under the canopy of giant sycamore figs, the oldest of which is estimated at 450 years.
The silence of the forest is broken by a multitude of bird calls typified by the wail of trumpeter hornbills. Special sightings have included Pels Fishing Owl, African Broadbill and Blue mantled Flycatcher.
Zulu Cutural Walk
Drive up into the rural community of the Lebombo Mountains and enjoy a walk with mountain views whilst learning about rural Zulu customs and living as it is today.
This 3-4 hour walk allows for interaction with the people of the area and gives a greater insight to both the joys and hardships of Africa today.
Mkhuze River Walk
This is a gentle 1-2 hour walk that leaves the hotel and traverses the dam in front of the hotel into the Mkhuze riverbed and along to the old weir.
A large number of birds both water and open savannah species are to be seen, with highlights including palm swifts, white-eared barbets, giant and malachite kingfishers, black coucal and many others.
Once out of the town surrounds the scenery offers up wonderful views of both Ghost Mountain and the Lebombo Mountain Range.
Ghost Mountain Hike
Enjoy a 3-4 hour hike to the top of the Ghost Mountain (Tshaneni) and take in the expansive view of the area including the battlegrounds of the 1884 Battle of Tshaneni.
Local legend has it that the mountain is haunted and there are claims that, at times, lights can be seen emanating from the summit and eerie sounds can be heard.
This intriguing mountain is a protected site of cultural and historical significance. Hike up the eastern side and learn more about the history and folklore of the mountain and the surrounding area.
