South Africa Destinations
The Garden Route
The Garden Route is the stretch of coast along the Western Cape between Cape Town and the Storms River in the Eastern Cape, which makes a superb self-drive route.
A very popular stop along South Africa’s Garden Route, Knysna is a beautiful spot where the most well-known attraction is the two great sandstone cliffs guarding the mouth of the lagoon.
Plettenberg Bay is a popular whale watching location and the town of George is the commercial centre and transport hub of the Garden Route.

Mossel Bay
Mossel Bay is a large town which marks the beginning of the Garden Route at its Western end. Unattractive at first sight, Mossel Bay nevertheless has some nice beaches and is a good base for boat excursions to Seal Island.
The town is also famous for the ancient Milkwood Tree which was used as a mail delivery point for ships heading along the coast.
Plenty of adventure activities and hiking trails are available in and around Mossel Bay.
George
George is a rather large and uninspiring town on the Garden Route but is served by an airport and offers several excellent golf courses within easy reach. South of George, Victoria Bay is a popular surf spot.
Wilderness
Wilderness is one of the most beautiful spots on the Garden Route with forested hillsides overlooking white sandy surf beaches. Quiet lagoons are home to abundant birdlife and many people hire kayaks to get out onto the lagoons.
Wilderness feels less touristy than many towns along the Garden Route and is quite spread out.
Knysna
In many ways the capital of the Garden Route, Knysna is a medium sized town which was formerly the centre of the timber trade in this region of South Africa.
Knysna is surrounded by ancient forests and a stunning lagoon but is also very popular during high season.
Lagoon cruises are highly recommended and the township tours are an excellent way to experience a different side of South Africa.
