Madikwe Game Reserve
Madikwe is something of a hidden gem in terms of Game Reserves in South Africa. Wildlife is extremely abundant in Madikwe, which is the fourth largest Game Reserve in South Africa.
March to September is the optimum time for wildlife viewing in Madikwe.
Game Lodges in Madikwe are a very high standard and a stay here can be very much the equal or better than a visit to the Kruger National Park.
There are no self-drives allowed in Madikwe, but the Game vehicles can go off-road within the reserve.
Pilanesberg National Park
Pilanesberg occupies an ancient volcanic crater about 10 km to the north of Sun City. Pilanesberg is very accessible and offers excellent malaria-free game viewing.
Pilanesberg can be done as a self-drive and the park is teeming with wildlife including the Big 5, cheetahs, hyenas, wild dog, hippos, zebra and giraffe.
Pilanesberg can seem quite busy, especially at weekends and holidays and off-road driving is forbidden. It is possible to get off the main routes however on the smaller gravel roads through the park.
