Khum Lanna
Set in a small valley surrounded by mountains, Khum Lanna is located in the serene village of Phrao, an hour and a half drive from Chiang Mai.
Amidst emerald-green rice fields and lush orchards, Khum Lanna offers a luxurious home-stay experience combined with a cooking school specializing in traditional Northern Thai cuisine. In sum, it is a celebration of heritage, food and lifestyle.
Combination packages for Khum Lanna and Lisu Lodge are also available. For the more adventurous, there is also a 5-day trekking program including one night at Khum Lanna, two nights at two outposts, and one night at Lisu Lodge.
Prices includes accommodation in comfortable king-size or twin bedded rooms with en-suite bathrooms (where applicable), electric fans (non air-conditioned), meals and drinks as specified in the programs, as well as English speaking tour/activity guides.
What's so Special?
Khum Lanna is a great way to experience hilltribe culture, especially in combination with a stay at Lisu Lodge.
Day 1: Khum Lanna
Pick up from your hotel or the airport in Chiang Mai. On arrival in the afternoon, enjoy a refreshing welcoming drink of herbal tea or fruit juice from the garden.
To blend in with the surroundings, guests are provided with a traditional Thai farmers' shirts to wear during the stay.
Your lunch will include a Lanna country-style barbeque, steamed sticky rice that you prepared earlier and other delicious Thai dishes.
Additionally, your host will teach you simple Thai words that you can use when shopping at a local market the following day.
Thailand is known as one of the world’s biggest rice producers, and rice is inevitably the most important crop. One of the objectives of Khum Lanna is to promote Thai rice under the concept “Rice for Life”.
Learn about the history of rice cultivation, different species of Thai rice, and tools and equipment used in the rice fields as well as having the chance to put those new found cooking skills to practice by making a staple Thai dish of steamed sticky rice.
Afterwards enjoy a casual walk around Khum Lanna’s organic garden where a variety of vegetables, fruits and herbs are grown.
The host at Khum Lanna will demonstrate how to pick the right ingredients for the cooking class in the afternoon. Lunch includes a Lanna country-style barbeque, steamed sticky rice and other tempting Thai dishes.
In the afternoon, choose from a variety of fun and relaxing activities, including:
- A guided bike tour around the beautiful countryside of Khum Lanna
- A class of creative fruit (or vegetable) carving
- A local rejuvenating herbal steam bath
- A therapeutic hot-pressed herbal massage
A second additional one-hour activity can be booked at a nominal charge but guests are welcome to go cycling independently.
Khum Lanna will provide a road map with recommended routes. In the late afternoon, enjoy another cooking session with the experienced Thai chef and again, enjoy a full four-course Thai dinner with your host and friends.
Day 2: Khum Lanna
Coffee or tea is served in-room as a morning wake-up call. Start the day with a sunrise cycling trip along a rural country road to visit a village market.
With the help of the guide, buy local biscuits and garlands to offer to the monks during a visit to a temple.
Take a short walk to a local hardware shop that sells farm tools, supplies and rice seed. Chat with the owner (also a farmer) and learn more about the history of Thai rice and different species and properties of rice.
On the way back, visit a Buddhist temple where a respected Buddha image is enshrined under a sacred tree.
Continue cycling to Khum Lanna along a scenic route of canals and rice fields. On return, a Lanna-style breakfast awaits by the riverside.
Enjoy the rest of the morning at leisure before your late morning departure back to Chiang Mai and drop off at your hotel or the airport.
