Mae Hong Son is both the name of the 'city' and the province in the far North West of Thailand, bordering the Shan State of Burma.
Reached in a few hours by car or a 30-minute flight from Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son is an attractive and likeable town set around a small 'lake' overlooked by a beautiful Burmese inspired temple.
Mae Hong Son acts as a base for exploring this quite remote and beautiful mountainous region of Thailand which is home to several different hilltribe peoples including the Shan, Karen, Hmong, Lisa and Lahu amongst others.
Highlights of a trip to Mae Hong Son include spectacular caves, soft adventure activities and community based activities where it's possible to get a great insight into the traditional crafts and customs of the hilltribes.
The small town of Pai has developed rapidly in recent times but maintains that laid-back vibe which has been attracting visitors for many years.
