Lunuganga

Lunuganga Estate was the country home of the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, converted to a country house hotel in 2003.

Two and a half hours from the airport, Lunuganga has just 5 rooms, making this an exclusive and intimate place to stay.

A stay at Lunuganga will really suit those looking for a boutique hotel high on ambience and the home of Sri Lanka’s most famous architect.

As much a heritage attraction and testimony to Geoffrey Bawa, a stay at Lunuganga Estate is quite unlike staying in a normal hotel, even a boutique hotel.

There are 4 suites at Lunuganga and one Two-bedroom cottage. Suites are brimming with antiques, sculptures and artworks once owned by Bawa.

Things have been left largely unchanged since the architect used this as his summer retreat.

The suites offer a great insight into the style of Bawa – especially the used of Black and White motifs.

What’s so Special?

The wonderfully sprawling landscaped gardens by the lakeside here, which spread over 15-acres were Geoffrey Bawa’s inspiration so a stay here is quite a special experience.

Wander amongst the beautifully landscaped gardens and enjoy the super views over Deduwa Lake.

The Suites are fascinating places to stay – not something you can say about many hotel rooms around the world. The Gallery Suite is particularly richly furnished with art and antiques.

Bear in mind

The gardens at Lunuganga are open to the public so they aren’t quite exclusive.

Only the Guestroom Suite is air-conditioned although the climate doesn’t normally require air conditioning.

Lunuganga doesn’t have a swimming pool or sun-loungers.

Lunuganga doesn’t accommodate children under 12.

The Guestroom Suite

This was the main guest room in the house and is located off the main entrance hall opposite the master bedroom. It sleeps two in a double bed and has a small private sitting area overlooking a walled courtyard and an en suite bathroom also open to its own small private walled courtyard.

This Suite unlike the other rooms is air-conditioned. The Suite is beautifully furnished with Bawa’s private collection of paintings and artworks. The bathroom features a bathtub.

The Garden Room

The Garden Rooms’ proportions come entirely from the recycled building elements that make it up. The large sliding doors, the 18th C windows and a front of a shop house with its panels replaced with glass and the panels themselves used as a baluster for the upper level deck.

All the other structural wood is also recycled. The large single plank worktable was the only real place to spread out a drawing in the whole of the garden.

The Glass Room

The Glass Room is an unusual room that bridges across the entry portico and is entirely glass walled on two sides. Waking up (if one dares!) with all the curtains open looking into the trees of the entry court and the Red Terrace is in itself a magical experience. A small toilet also opening into the trees is almost like a bird watchers hide.

The Gallery Room

The Gallery Room is available on request and is by far the largest suite on the estate. A bed is placed in the middle of what is otherwise a gallery housing a part of the Geoffrey Bawa Collection.

A dressing room and bathroom overlooks the Water Garden, as does the lower gallery, which acts as a sitting room.

The Gallery Room was originally a stable and is a popular attraction in itself amongst other guests when unoccupied.

The Gatehouse Suite

The Gatehouse Suite overlooks the northern part of the Cinnamon Hill and was once used to house architectural assistants that Bawa brought along if he needed to work during a weekend in the 1960's.

The bedhead batik which is an original from the period was done by Ena de Silva based on a drawing by Laki Senanayake.

Cinnamon Hill House

The Cinnamon hill house was the last major construction to happen on the estate and consists of a sitting area, entrance hall, two bedrooms with unique en-suite bathrooms and a separate pantry and staff area.

The cottage is set on the fringe of the plantation with views over the cinnamon plantation, forests and the lake. It may be reserved by the room or as a whole making it an ideal retreat for a discerning couple or for a family.

Dining

The house speciality is Sri Lankan Food served to various recipes and preparations that were part of the life of the house during the life of Geoffrey Bawa.

The aim is to provide an authentic experience of Sri Lankan home cooking to all guests. A changing menu, which includes both Sri Lankan and international cuisines is offered.

There are various dining options around the estate.

The main dining space is the large round table in the Front Veranda, which can seat up to 8 at a time. This was the main dining space during the use of the house by Geoffrey Bawa.

The Red Terrace was favourite lunch location for Geoffrey Bawa. The cement table with leaf impressions overlooks the Water Garden.

Meals are also served on the Side Veranda for smaller groups of up to 4 and also on the terrace on the edge of the lake.

Meals are also served on the Northern Terrace for smaller groups of up to 4 and also on the terrace on the edge of the lake.
