Around 170 km south of Zanzibar's main island lies the little known and unfortunately named Mafia Island, which is really a small archipelago of sparsely populated unspoilt islands.
Resorts on Mafia Island are limited to a handful of boutique resorts including the very charming Butiama Beach Resort. Mafia Island itself is 50 km by 15 km and consists of fishing and farming villages and a handful of rustic boutique resorts.
For an off the beaten track beach holiday, perhaps combined with a stay in Zanzibar's main island or with a safari in Tanzania's Selous Game Reserve, a beach holiday on Zanzibar's Mafia Island is a wonderfully exotic option.
