Getting your way to San Juan River is already an adventure in itself. This remote beautiful area is home to Nicaragua’s wettest lands and most pristine nature reserves.
The river, navigated centuries ago by indigenous communities, Spanish conquerors and British pirates offers excellent opportunities for birdlife spotting.
The area’s main settlement, San Carlos, is located on the shores of Lake Nicaragua and serves as a base to explore the Solentiame Archipelago.
Another highlight of the area is the 17th century Spanish fortress set in El Castillo, just a 2-hour boat trip from San Carlos.
