Mistook it for the sea by Spanish Conquerors, Lake Nicaragua is considered the largest freshwater lake in Central America and one of Nicaragua’s most beautiful destinations.
The lake is home to the inhabited Ometepe Island, with its twin-coned volcanoes, the Granada Isletas (360 diminutive islands dispersed around the lake 12 miles south of colonial Granada) and the isolated Solentiname Archipelago, set on the south-eastern corner of the lake.
Volcano hike, kayaking, hanging around on a lakeshore beach or taking a siesta in a hammock are experiences not to be missed when in Lake Nicaragua.
