Top Places to see in Nicaragua

Nicaragua is Central America's largest country and is without doubt the up and coming destination in Central America.

Often referred to as the 'Land of Lakes and Volcanoes', at present Nicaragua is relatively undiscovered by UK visitors, especially compared to Costa Rica, Mexico or even Guatemala.

It's not going to stay like that for long however as people are slowly waking up to the many great reasons to visit Nicaragua.

Here is our quick fire guide to the best places to see in Nicaragua.

Corn Islands

Little and Big Corn Islands have been known to surfers and backpackers for a long time (and to pirates before that), but more recently with new hotel openings, the Corn Islands have gradually emerged as an exciting destination and certainly one of the top places to go in Nicaragua.

They are still sufficiently off the beaten track however, just 43 miles off the Caribbean coastline of Nicaragua and boasting beautiful beaches and great diving and snorkelling.

Three daily flights connect the mainland now to Big Corn Island, an island only 6 square miles in area.

Granada

Situated right by Lake Nicaragua, Granada is at the top of almost everyone's list of best places to see in Nicaragua for its charming old colonical ambience, buzzy atmosphere and magnificent Spanish-era buildings.

Stroll along the main boulevard from the centre of town to the lake and enjoy a great array of local restaurants. You're sure to want to stop and sample a Vigoron - a traditional Nicaraguan dish.

Stroll through Parque Colon and take in the artisitic vibe, enjoy a horse and carriage ride around town and and kayak around the islets of Lake Nicaragua.

Leon

The former capital is another of the top places to see in Nicaragua and preserves one of the most interesting colonial centres in Central America, including the magnificent cathedral.

Leon is actually the third biggest city in Nicaragua and is something of an artistic and cultural hotspot.

Surrounded by active volcanoes, Leon is also a great jumping off point for discovering some of Nicaragua's dramatic volcanic landscapes.

The Northern Mountains

Along wth the Pacific and Caribbean Coasts, the Northern Mountains of Nicaragua makes up the three main regions of the country.

One of the highlights of a trip to this region of Nicaragua is the Cloud Forest at Selva Negra near Matagalpa which is a superb walking and bird watching area and one of the most scenic corners of Nicaragua.

Matagalpa is the more scenic and elegant of the two main cities in this area and is a great place to explore the colonial architecture and tour some coffee plantations.

Esteli is another city on the list of best places to visit in Nicaragua. Famous for it's tobacco cultivation, this is a charming city home to ranchers, merchants and artists.
