Discover Mandalay

Mandalay is the former capital of Burma and is a must on any tour of Burma. It's the cultural and spiritual capital of Myanmar and is a great base for exploring some of the surrounding attractions such as the royal cities of Ava and Amarapura, the Mingun Pagoda and the perenially photogenic U-Bein bridge.

It's also the start or end point for many of the river cruises in Burma - either on the Irrawaddy or the Chindwin Rivers.

I'm often asked by our customers whether it's worth stopping in Mandalay as they have read that the city isn't especially attractive. This is true really - Mandalay itself isn't the most beautiful city in South East Asia but it's the places around Mandalay which make it a must on any Burma tour - it's really not somewhere you can miss if you want to really see Burma.

There is a shortage of good boutique hotels in Mandalay as well, but one which I love is the Hotel by the Red Canal - it's not strictly luxury and the pool is quite small, but it's a real oasis in Mandalay and one I always like to recommend.
