Birkenhead House
Luxurious, elegant and exuberant, Birkenhead House is located high on the cliffs near the picturesque seaside town of Hermanus, with uninterrupted expansive views over the whale-watching paradise of Walker Bay with the backdrop of frequently mist-shrouded mountains.
Built on the site of the Birkenhead Hotel (named after the British troop ship that sank in Walker Bay in 1852) Birkenhead House is the epitome of contemporary beach house cool: modern, stylish and visually stunning.
Birkenhead House offers an artful and eclectic mix of classical beach house, quirkiness and eccentric opulence (the plastic Marylin Monroe statue seems strangely in keeping).
Each of the 11 rooms at Birkenhead House offers uninterrupted views and are elegantly furnished with sparkling chandeliers, and four-poster beds.
The ambience is laidback, easy going and fun and the food the finest international fusion cuisine.
There is plenty to see and do nearby including whale watching and visiting Fernkloof Nature Reserve which is a superb destination for walks amongst the fynbos.
What’s so Special?
Perched high on the Hermanus Cliffs, Birkenhead House overlooks the whale watching paradise and cyan waters of Walker Bay and two of the best swimming beaches in the area, including popular Voelklip Beach.
Between July and December whales come to Walker Bay to calve and can usually be easily seen from the elegant hotel lounge.
Birkenhead House was developed by Liz and Phil Biden after the original Birkenhead Hotel burnt down in 1992. Liz is a great collector of art and Birkenhead House reflects the owners’ passion for lavish and eccentric modern and classical art.
Bear in Mind
Birkenhead House is characterised by a relaxed and easygoing atmosphere where you can breakfast at noon, take tea on your balcony, then watch the ocean at dusk over a cocktail or two.
Dinners are leisurely, staffs are friendly and knowledgeable, the pace is laidback - relaxation is the order of the day.
Liz Biden’s other two properties are Royal Malawane and La Residence in Franschhoek, which make excellent combinations for a stay at Birkenhead House.
