This fun guest house, just outside Clarens in the Eastern Free State, looks like it has been transported straight off the pages of a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale.

Close to the charming arty town of Clarens, the Castle in Clarens will suit those with an imagination, a sense of adventure and those looking to stay somewhere shall we say ‘rather unique’.

There are no dull moments to be had in this part of the world, and as the saying goes you are responsible for creating your own magic – it just helps if you are staying in a castle where the lines of fantasy and reality blur.

There are just two bedrooms in Rapunzel’s Tower, sleeping 4 people in total, so quite a good choice for a family.

One of the rooms includes a bath suspended 12 metres above the floor, just as one would expect in a fairytale castle.

Cornerstones from Windsor Castle, tapestries from Dubai, light fittings from America and tiles from Europe all contribute to an eclectic decor.

The garden is especially designed to fit in with the Rapunzel fairytale. Thorn trees, small pathways, and of course the vegetable garden with the famous Rampion, are all very true to the fairytale.
