With just 11 rooms Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse is a haven and restful refuge for those looking to break away from fast-paced life to enjoy mountain walks, roaring log fires, 7 course dinners and time for relaxation and pampering.

The setting is really wonderful, just 2 hours by car from Durban, amongst the stunning mountain views, crystal clear streams and peaceful solitude of the Drakenberg.

Service is professional yet understated and the atmosphere is very casual with little formality.

Owners Richard and Mouse Poynton were amongst the originators of the Country House movement in the 1980’s, when they established the wonderful Granny Mouse’s Country House.

Bear in Mind

Summer temperatures may range from 20°C during the day, often with dramatic afternoon thunderstorms. Winter daytime temperatures range from 10°C to 25°C and the night temperatures can drop to below 0°C.

Richard has always had a love of fine food, as his ample proportions are testament to.

Passion and dedication are the keywords in the Cleopatra kitchen – and Richard’s speciality is sauces, a subject very close to his heart.

He has long been obsessed with reduction techniques – which allow the full intense flavour of the food to shine through.

The menu changes according to the season and the produce from the gardens or local sources.

There is a bountifully stocked underground cellar with a focus on South African wines.
