Elephant Stables

Elephant Stables is a charming Colonial period bungalow, the home of a former Ceylonese nobleman, and the uncle of a former Sri Lankan Prime Minister, the first female to be elected head of government in the world.

Set on a hilltop just 15-minutes from Kandy, Elephant Stables has been lovingly restored with a combination of original mid-century planter’s furniture and chic interiors, creating a superb boutique hotel.

The location just 15 minutes from Kandy means that everything is within easy reach. It's quite easy to pop back for lunch during a day exploring Kandy.

Elephant Stables has just 6 rooms and suites in two separate buildings. Bedrooms all feature teak four-poster beds.

Unlike many boutique hotels in Sri Lanka, Elephant Stables is very family friendly. Two suites (The Vanilla Suite and The Cottage Suite) have ample space and extra beds to sleep kids of all ages.

Many private spaces and large gardens create a very homely and welcoming environment in one of the best boutique hotels in Kandy.

Historic associations play a large role in the make up of Elephant Stables which is one of the best boutique hotels in Kandy.

A kitchen team is led by master chef Indika and produces some of the best cuisine in the whole of Sri Lanka.

Elephant Stables has a couple of great vintage Austins, available for sightseeing in the Kandy area – a unique way to go touring.

Bear in mind

Elephant Stables employs a mix of professionally trained managers who work alongside staff from villages’ right across the island.

A few of the staff at customer facing level may not possess great English skills but their friendliness and warmth is totally genuine and consistently receives great feedback.

Elephant Stables has 6 luxurious rooms and suite, each styled using a unique mix of contemporary mid-Century modern design and Colonial period planter’s style furniture.

All Rooms feature large four-poster beds in all rooms and suites. If you require twin beds, Elephant Stables will assemble a Single Teak Bed in addition free of charge in your room – likewise if a tripl room is required.

Pepper Deluxe Garden Room

Located on the upper floor of the New Wing with views on 2 sides over the garden and a wrap around upstairs veranda with outdoor seating.

This room features a Four-poster bed and a separate changing area with a wardrobe recess.

Lemongrass Deluxe Garden Room

Lemongrass is located on the upper floor of the New Wing with an upstairs veranda containing outdoor seating and overlooking the garden.

This room features a Four-poster bed and a very large and stylish bathroom.

Saffron Deluxe Colonial Room

Saffron has a medium size bedroom on the upper floor of the Colonial Wing with a Four-poster bed looking out over the pool and garden.

The room is furnished with a lovely blend of colonial and modern styles. This is the middle room of the Colonial Wing located inbetween the two Colonial Suites.

This room is a perfect choice for anyone who doesn't need a large suite, but would like to experience the colonial ambience of the original property.

Vanilla Colonial Suite

Vanilla is a large suite room in the upper floor of the Colonial Wing with a Four-poster bed with an additional small interconnecting room containing a Bunk Bed.

This is the perfect choice for a family of 2 adults and 2 young children (under 12), for a triple room or for Honeymooners.

Citronella Colonial Suite

Citronella is a large bedroom on the upper floor of the Colonial Wing with a Four-poster bed and lovely views of the surrounding mountains.

The room offers lovely views of the mist covered Knuckles mountains in the distance.

The Cottage Suite

This large stand alone cottage in the garden overlooks the back lawn and pool and is ideal for those looking for a substantial amount of space.

The room is partitioned with a ‘cut out’ wall so that one area contains a ‘private’ bedroom with a Four-poster bed. The other part contains a living area with two separate Single Teak Beds.

This is the perfect choice for a family of 2 adults and 2 young children (under 12), for a triple room or for Honeymooners.

Breakfast

A full English breakfast is prepared daily. The breakfast menu also contains several Continental breakfast options too.

If you wish to go traditional, try a Sri Lankan ‘Hopper’ breakfast – a very popular breakfast dish among foreign visitors to Sri Lanka!

Hoppers are soft-leavened flatbreads, cooked in wok shaped pans to make a bowl shaped bread. They are typically eaten with a variety of spicy sambols (Sri Lankan salsas).

The Sri Lankan Coconut Pancakes are also an excellent option.

Lunch

The A La Carte Lunch Menu features quick meals or snacks such as pasta, sandwiches, toasties or salads for guests returning for a speedy lunch in the middle of a busy day’s sightseeing in Kandy.

Dinner

The kitchen team offers a choice of two set menus on a daily basis.

The evening 3-course menu always includes a superb Sri Lankan Rice And Curry option plus an Asian Fusion or Western alternative. Appetizing Vegetarian meals are specially prepared on request.

The Head Chef also has a list of over 50 A La Carte fusion dishes up his sleeve – of course some advance planning may be required for a few of these to be prepared, but guests are welcome to discuss menus and meal preferences with the Chef at any time.

Afternoon Tea

Elephant Stables serves Afternoon Tea on the lawn between 3 pm – 6 pm.

The Green Dining Room

This was the traditional ‘breakfast room’ of Sir Cudah Ratwatte and is located on the Ground Floor of the Old Wing and features 4 Colonial era dining tables.

The New Wing Bar Area

The bar area features a Dining Table that is suitable for 6 people for those who prefer private family dining.

The New Wing Veranda

There are 3 Two Seat Tables located on the veranda. This is definitely the most popular location for dining at Elephant Stables.

Outdoor Dining In The Garden

There are two polished concrete dining tables placed under a pergola in the Poolside Garden, next to the swimming pool.

Up to 8 people can dine outside in private on a specially laid out and highly romantic candle-lit table.

The Front Garden

The front garden sit out is an ideal place for snacks while enjoying the magnificent views of the Knuckles Mountains in the far distance.
