A Gothic-Tudor fantasy villa, this heritage boutique hotel in Shanghai is an unforgettable place to stay – a fairy tale 1930’s villa, former residence of Eric Moller, a British-Swedish shipping magnate who came to Shanghai in 1919.

Moller Villa consists of an original historic wing and a more modern wing.

Steeples, spires, gables, colourful brickwork, labyrinthine corridors and period furniture, fixtures and fittings are the hallmarks of this colonial-era mansion.

The hotel has a lovely private walled garden onto which a café terrace looks out – the perfect spot for afternoon tea.

The location in the North-west of Shanghai’s French Concession district is just 10-minutes walk from two MTR stations, which make getting around Shanghai a breeze.

The boutique shops and plentiful restaurants are within a short stroll of the hotel.

Rooms in the old wing are old-fashioned and can be small. The suites are more modern and spacious.

What’s so Special?

Definitely Shanghai’s quirkiest and most unusual places to stay, we went to see the hotel expecting a gothic monstrosity and gloomy interior, but despite the rather overwhelming Scandinavian gothic façade, Hengshan Moller Villa is actually a very homely, charming and liveable boutique hotel.

The original story goes that Mr Moller ordered the house built after his daughter had a dream about a fairy tale villa and sketched it on waking up.

The reality is that Mr Moller, the shipping magnate had a large role in the design of his family home, evidenced in several references to shipping and horses throughout (round windows in the corridors, equine statues in the garden).

The Villa served as the HQ of the Communist youth league in Shanghai before being turned into a boutique hotel in 2002.

The hotel was closed for some time whilst being used as an investigation facility into corrupt local officials – so the hotel has quite a few modern stories from within its walls as well.

Bear in mind

Hengshan Moller Villa is unique and quirky and will suit those looking for a memorable and interesting boutique hotel in Shanghai.

The service at Moller Vila isn’t perfect, and many of the rooms feel quite old fashioned, with numerous imperfections.
