Montusi Mountain Lodge
Located in a stunning setting in the Drakensberg Mountains of KwaZulu-Natal within a hop, skip and a jump of the Royal Natal National Park, Montusi Mountain Lodge is a stunning mountain getaway and an ideal luxurious base for hiking and other activities in the Drakensbergs.
Guests come here for the space, comfort, peace and relaxation as well as the access to some of South Africa’s best hiking and stunning scenery.
Situated in the Kwa-Zulu-Natal Drakensberg, halfway between Johannesburg and Durban, Montusi Mountain Lodge is the only upmarket destination in the area with a full and uninterrupted view of the Drakensberg's most famous part, the Amphitheatre escarpment.
Montusi Mountain Lodge consists of a large and beautifully thatched main building with reception, dining room, terrace, bar, lounge and massage treatment room.
14 Private individual garden suites feature huge windows with sweeping views of the Drakensberg escarpment. A separate small lounge area has a sofa for two and a TV. Chairs are set out on the private deck from which to enjoy the views, for which the term ‘majestic’ is for once entirely appropriate.
Activities on the 1,000-hectare estate are diverse. Many come just to enjoy the peace and the views; others come to explore the mountain trails. Whatever the reason for a visit there is the opportunity to do as much or as little as desired.
What’s so Special?
This is truly one of the most spectacular locations in South Africa.
Doing nothing is probably the most sought after pastime at Montusi. No pressure, no wake up calls (in fact no telephone in the room), hot water all day long and plenty of space to recharge.
The Carte family has owned the lodge since 2000 and are committed to the conservation of the Northern Drakensberg. The owners transformed a Wattle infested wasteland into a rehabilitated conservation area.
The indigenous trees and manmade forests continue to flourish and the resultant birdlife (once non-existent) has become abundant.
This ethic has resulted in the return of the Mountain Reedbuck, Vaal Rhebuck, Bushbuck and the elusive Eland to this area once inhabited by Bushmen.
Bear in mind
Children are welcome at the lodge and early meal times and babysitting can be arranged. The atmosphere of the lodge however requires that children aren’t left to tear about.
