Shamwari Game Reserve is an award winning and ground breaking Game Reserve in the malaria free eastern cape and is perfect for couples, small groups and families looking for a luxury safari experience at the end of Garden Route.

Shamwari is located in verdant bush along the Bushman's River, half way between Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown, a natural extension to the garden Route.

Shamwari is also the headquarters of the famous Born Free Foundation in South Africa and has one of the leading Wildlife Rehabilitation Centres in the world.

Shamwari Private Game Reserve offers 7 different lodges.

Shamwari Reserve has five natural ecosystems which support a wide range of wildlife, including buffalo, elephant, rhino (both black and white), lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog and hyena.

Game viewing takes place in open 4x4 safari vehicles twice a day for 3 hours, once early in the morning and again in the afternoon/evening.

When not on a game drive, free time can be spent relaxing, reading, enjoying spa treatments, swimming, bush walks or visiting the Born Free Big Cat Sanctuary, the Ian Player Rhino Awareness centre or the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.

Shamwari has six luxury lodge accommodation options to suit varying budgets and tastes. The location of the reserve is where the English 1820 settlers arrived and settled and as a result, most of the lodges have a strong colonial period feel about them.

What’s so Special?

Shamwari has a very strong conservation and responsible tourism ethos which make this private game reserve truly special. Shamwari has been awarded the World’s Leading Conservation Company and Game Reserve for many years running.

All proceeds of any guests stay at the reserve goes back into their wildlife conservation.

Shamwari is a great choice for a family holiday to South Africa, as not only is it malaria-free, but the reserve also has a ‘Kids Co-ordinator’ who will discuss activity options for everyone on arrival.

Bear in Mind

Children are welcome at Shamwari, though children 4yrs and under are too young to go on game drives.

Some accommodation options are better suited to children, with the best being Riverdene Lodge and Sarili Lodge.

Upon arrival at the lodge, the lodge manager will discuss the different and most apropriate activity options taking into account the family size, ages and weather for that time of year.

In our opinion, the Riverdene Lodge is the best lodge for families with children because they have a dedicated childrens co-ordinator.

At this lodge, the children can do various social, sporting, arts and cultural activities. Swimming is possible too, but only under parental supervision. The activities generally focus around the promotion of conservation.

Eagles Crag Lodge

A sophisticated safari experience, Eagles Crag Lodge provides exclusivity and spectacular views.

Making efficient use of its idyllic setting, guests can immerse themselves in the natural surroundings amongst lush vegetation and rocky cliffs.

The lodge comprises suites fashioned of glass and stone.

To ensure an unforgettable experience, Eagles Crag offers uninterrupted views of the surrounding rock faces where eagles soar.
