Overlooking Spioenkop battlefield, near Ladysmith, Three Trees at Sioenkop is a homely, farm-style eco-friendly lodge overlooking the 1000-hectare Spioenkop Nature Reserve, offering a great base for exploring KwaZulu-Natal’s Battlefields and the Drakensberg.

Three Trees at Sioenkop (also known as Three Tree Hill Lodge) is an intimate, luxury 18 bed lodge, owner-managed by Simon & Cheryl Blackburn whose passion and enthusiasm for Africa’s wildlife, history and culture is immediately evident.

The lodge is situated on a Nature Reserve, which is very popular for walkers and White Rhino, Giraffe and other game are present. The lodge offers battlefield tours, guided walks and horse riding.

The location offers the ideal environment in which to unwind and be rejuvenated and the close proximity to the Drakensberg makes a stay at Three Trees at Spioenkop the perfect place from which to explore this beautiful area of South Africa.

The main living area at the lodge has an open-plan design, with four sets of large double doors leading onto the veranda, where guests can relax on a comfy chair.

In the winter an open log fire and “Dover” coal stove create a warm, cosy environment.

What’s so Special?

The product of a partnership between the late David Rattray and previous owner, Three Trees at Spioenkop aims to bring to life the Anglo-Boer battle of Spioenkop, with which Winston Churchill was involved.

Each room at Three Trees Spioenkop has its own deck, which offers uninterrupted views of the valley and Spioenkop

The veranda at Three Tree Hill Lodge where meals often are served overlooks Spioenkop Nature Reserve.

Bear in mind

Close to the base of Van Reenens Pass, the lodge is an ideal half way stop between Johannesburg & Durban, only 27km from the N3 highway.

The lodge is 2-hours from the Anglo-Zulu War Battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift.

The owners are animal lovers, so expect to encounter most of the four dogs, some of the nine horses, three cats and six chickens during your stay.
