Kampot
Kampot is a sleepy riverside town of 40,000 people in the south of Cambodia which has seen something of a resurgence in recent years having gone into almost terminal decline during the Khmer Rouge period.
Reasons to break a tour of Cambodia with a night or two here include visits to Bokor Hill Station and to enjoy the somnambulant atmosphere of the riverside setting.
Several colonial era buildings are worth a look and a fabulously cobbled together bridge spans the river.
A couple of nice boutique guesthouses in Kampot make an overnight stay a reasonable proposition.

Kampot Uncovered
Get behind the scenes in Kampot on a half-day excursion and see the night fishermen returning with their catch, learn about colonial era Kampot and explore the countryside and learn about the famous local Kampot pepper.
For the early risers, set out just before dawn for an optional visit to the Kampot Fish Market, a very small market at the Kampot River's bank.
As the sun slowly rises watch the night fishermen return with their catch, and witness the lively scenes of a traditional market rarely visited by tourists.
Return back to the hotel for breakfast before take a tour of the sleepy riverside town to see the French colonial style houses and villas dating from the 19th and 20th centuries.
Many of these crumbling architectural gems are slowly being restored to their former glory, such as the old Governor's Mansion, which now houses the Kampot Museum.
Inside the elegant walls is a fascinating display of photographs and paintings that portray life in the town under the French protectorate.
Also on display are statues and sculptures, many pre-Angkorian, that were found in the local area.
Leave the town behind and head out into the Cambodian countryside to an organic pepper plantation to see how the aromatic Kampot pepper is made.
Hear the fascinating history behind Sothy's Pepper Farm and learn about the farming methods, different types of pepper, and the growing and harvesting seasons.
