Bali & Indonesia Destinations
Bali - Eastern Bali
The east of the island is a great place to stay in Bali. Things are quieter and more traditional here and there is a great chance to discover something of the real Balinese lifestyle and culture.
Lines of local women carrying temple offerings on their heads are an almost daily sight in this part of Bali. Besakih Temple, majestic Mount Agung, intriguing water palaces and spectacular scenery are some of the delights of the East of Bali.
Alila Manggis is one of the best value boutique resorts in Bali, and divers will love Siddhartha Bali Dive Resort & Spa.

Besakih Temple
Visit Besakih Temple, known as the Mother Temple of Bali, sitting in a dramatic setting over a thousand feet up the volcanic slopes of Gunung Agung, Bali's largest and most beautiful volcano.
Besakih is also home to Bali’s largest temple complex, comprising 23 separate, but related temples. Pura Penataran Agung, a six-tiered temple terraced up the mountain, is the most important of these temples. The backdrop is impressive and if the mist rolls in from the sea the feeling can be quite otherworldly.
Enjoy a morning or afternoon visit to this spectacularly located temple.

Eastern Bali Explorer
Spend a day exploring the diverse landscapes and rich culture of East Bali. Visit spectacular natural sites and man-made wonders like Titra Gangga temple and discover ancient traditions in a Bali Aga village.
This morning, set off from your hotel with a guide and driver to explore Bali’s East Coast. Your first destination is the peaceful rural area of Sidemen, which is known for its beautiful landscapes.
Stop at rice paddy fields and visit a salak plantation where you can taste Bali’s famed ‘snakeskin’ fruit; an interesting exploration of the heart of Bali.
Continue with a visit to Tirta Gangga. Meaning 'water of the Ganges', this sacred water palace was built in the early 20th century by the last king of Karangasem. It boasts many decorative ponds and fountains, lush plant life and natural bathing pools.
Lunch will be served in Tirta Ayu Restaurant with beautiful views of the countryside.
Continue with a drive to the south. Pass through the seaside town of Candidasa as you make your way to the last stop: the Aga Village of Tenganan. The village is home to Bali’s first inhabitants who arrived to Bali before the peoples of the Majapahit dynasty of Java. See the village’s distinct architecture and distinct compound structure as well as observe the weaving of traditional ikat and baskets.
After the village tour, follow the coastal road back to your hotel. Should time allow, a stop will be made in Kusumba to watch the sunset.

Diving in Bali
The East and North of Bali is home to the best diving in Bali. Siddhartha Dive Resort & Spa is an excellent choice for divers, especially for couples where only one partner dives, as they have a superb spa.
Diving day trips are easily organised at Amed or Tulamben.
Beaches
The beaches in Eastern Bali tend to be darker volcanic sand or further north a little bit stonier. The beaches certainly aren't the highlight of this region of Bali. The coastline is beautiful, especially with the backdrop of Mount Agung, but those looking for Maldivian style beaches won't find that on the east coast of Bali.
Mount Agung
Mount Agung is easily climbed in a few hours along a fairly simple trekking route with no technical stretches. It's a superb trip and climbing a volcano before breakfast to see the sunrise over Bali offers a remarkable sense of achievement and a lifelong anecdote.
Besakih Temple
Bali's 'Mother Temple' is situated on the lower slopes of Mount Agung in a dramatic location looking out towards the sea. The setting is even more spectaular on a misty morning.
